A power company is working to restore electricity to a number of homes in Northampton after an outage.

About 200 buildings in the Bedford Road area lost their supply completely this morning. Other buildings - including Northampton General Hospital, which has back-up generators - also suffered several brief dips in power.

Western Power Distribution said that contractors had damaged a power cable in Rushmere Road, causing two separate problems.

About half the affected properties had electricity again within 20 minutes and most were back to normal after and hour.

However a small number were still affected by midday.
