A shop, which acts as a community hub in a Northamptonshire village, has received a rural award.

Shop@Stanwick, based in the Old School Bistro in Stanwick, has been named one of the Midlands Champions in the 2012 Countryside Alliance Awards.

The eighth annual awards are the Countryside Alliance’s annual celebration of rural produce, skills, enterprise and heritage through our small hard-working businesses.

The winners, including the shop, will go on to represent the region at the UK & Ireland finals at Parliament in Westminster on March 13.

The Stanwick shop came top of the enterprise category and regional director of the awards, Sara Rutherford, said: “This shop is a favourite of the Countryside Alliance and the team continues to delight with its “can do” attitude, re-invention and flair.”

The shop was opened in 2007 in the former post office but moved to the Old School in High Street in 2011.

A new roof, windows, structural repair and complete interior refurbishment took place and the new shop, post office and coffee shop opened last April.

Within the Old School an evening bistro called ‘Old School Dining’ opened alongside the shop, serving local produce, in which 23 staff from the village are now employed.

Ms Rutherford said the owners should be applauded “for creating a space for their community and breathing new life into the village.”
