Whispering Bob Harris smashes the last walnut for Prostate Cancer UK campaign

Northampton-born radio legend Whispering Bob Harris is heading up a national charity campaign on prostate cancer.

Bob, who has the disease himself, smashed the final walnut at the closing day of Prostate Cancer UK’s Nutcracker Suite, joining a prestigious list of nutcrackers who over the last two weeks have obliterated thousands of walnuts – which are a similar shape and size to the prostate – in order to raise awareness and funds for the charity’s Sledgehammer Fund.

He said: “As someone who has experienced prostate cancer, I know only too well how important it is that we urgently raise the funds to crack the disease once and for all. Prostate cancer isn’t something to whisper about – we should all shout about the disease so everyone, men and women alike, gets clued up on the most common cancer in men. Early detection is really important, and Prostate Cancer UK’s Nutcracker Suite is a great way of spreading the word and getting people involved. It’s fantastic to be here at the finale to make sure the Suite closes with a triumphant smash!”

For the last two weeks, every time a text or online donation of £5 or more was made to Prostate Cancer UK’s Sledgehammer Fund, a walnut was smashed in the window of the Nutcracker Suite – a disused shop in Holborn, London. The action was broadcast live via the charity’s website, so the person donating could watch their walnut being smashed.

You can still donate £5 to The Sledgehammer Fund by texting CRACK to 70004 or visiting prostatecanceruk.org
