Tributes have been paid to a former Northampton Saints player who died in the early hours of this morning.
Jim Attwood, aged 90, played for the Saints 20 times during the Second World War and has been the president of Northampton Mens Own rugby club since 1957.
Trevor Newton, Mr Attwood’s close friend, said he was and a popular and well-known figure in the east Midlands rugby world.
He said: “He was a very quiet gentle man and the term ‘gentleman Jim’ really sums him up.
“He re-started Mens Own rugby club in 1945 and was captain until he was made president in 1957.
“He was very actively involved in the club and used to enjoy cutting the grass on the pitch every Saturday.”
Mr Attwood, who lived in Weston Favell started his career at a rugby club affiliated to Doddridge Church.
He played for the Saints during the Second World War before he was called up to serve in the Royal Navy.
Mr Attwood’s funeral will be held at the Counties Crematorium in Milton Malsor and a wake will be held at Mens Own rugby club. A date has yet to be confirmed.
Mr Attwood leaves his wife Kathleen and son Adrian.
