A Northamptonshire-based craft brewer is toasting its success after securing listings in a major retailer for the very first time.

The agreement will see Gun Dog Ales supply its beers, including Jack’s Spaniels and Booze Hound, to The Midcounties Co-operative store in Woodford Halse, where the brewery is based, as well as at nearby branches on Byfield High Street, Watling Street in Towcester, and two stores in Daventry, realising its ambitions to expand.

Gun Dog Ales was approached by The Midcounties Co-operative after proving popular at the independent bars, restaurants and shops in which its products are currently available. The range will roll out across more of the Society’s stores should the initial launch be successful.

Founded by James and Sarah Pickering, Gun Dog Ales has grown from a hobby into an exciting business, producing a range of real ales using traditional and modern brewing methods, together with original recipes.

The company is known for sourcing its ingredients locally and prioritises its trading so that local pubs, restaurants and retailers benefit, a philosophy which aligns well with The Midcounties Co-operative’s passion for supporting local food and drink manufacturers.

Phil Ponsonby, Group General Manager at The Midcounties Co-operative Food, said: “Gun Dog Ales clearly shares our commitment to supporting people and businesses in the local area, and we’re pleased to add its products to our shelves in five stores in the Northamptonshire region.

“The company has developed a top class reputation locally for the quality of its beers, and we’re sure that its products will prove to be very popular indeed among our members and customers.”

James Pickering from Gun Dog Ales said: “This is a deal which gives us an opportunity to expand our business without losing sight of the ethical values which mean a great deal to us, so we’re really pleased to supply The Midcounties Co-operative’s food stores within the local area.

“We hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with the Society, and we’re looking forward to working with them going forward.”
