The manager of a pub where Ben Cohen is a regular customer is following in the rugby star’s footsteps, by taking to the dancefloor and competing in Strictly Northampton.
Joe Buckley is general manager at The Red Lion in East Haddon, a pub the former Northampton Saints star often visits.
And as the World Cup winner shows off his moves on BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing this weekend, Mr Buckley will be taking part in his first rehearsal for Strictly Northampton.
Mr Buckley, 26, is Northampton born and bred, and now lives in Wollaston.
As well as managing the pub, Mr Buckley is also the chef, and will have to fit his rehearsals in around his 80 -hour working week. He responded to a Chron appeal on Twitter to find the final contestant for the event.
He said: “I thought it would be a bit of a laugh, but I’ve got to take it more seriously now. I’ve not done anything like this before, maybe I should have done!
“I am looking forward to it. I play rugby as well so I am quite competitive. I’m a bit nervous about the first rehearsal, but once I have met my partner for the first time it will be fine.”
Mr Buckley said he also had a personal connection to Cynthia Spencer Hospice, which cared for his friend, Matt Pinnock, who died of a brain tumour last year. “It is something to drive me on a little bit more,” he said.
On his celebrity customer, Mr Buckley added: “I thought Ben did very well [on Strictly]. He moves quite well for a big lad.”
