THE leader of Northampton Borough Council says he hopes 500 new jobs will be created in the town by March 2013 as a result of the new enterprise zone.

Councillor David Mackintosh, (Con, Ecton Brook) outlined his vision for the town during a breakfast meeting of local businessman and community leaders at the University of Northampton yesterday.

Councillor Mackintosh said he knew the target of creating 500 jobs in a year was “ambitious” in the current economic climate but said he wanted to get the message across that the enterprise zone will be a good place to do business.

He said: “We are ambitious about creating jobs and we are marketing this enterprise zone around the whole world.

“We’re not saying it is going to be easy but by announcing this now we are showing our ambition to start creating jobs.

“The enterprise zone will offer big incentives for businesses as they will have business rate relief and they won’t have to go through the normal planning process.

“Everything we are doing with the enterprise zone is about regeneration and attracting investment.”

Yesterday’s meeting was organised by South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership SEMLEP, and was the fifth in the series of events across the region.

Dr Ann Limb OBE, chairman of SEMLEP, said: “We were delighted to present our SEMLEP business plan at the university in Northampton surrounded by innovative technology. Our business plan shows how we can make a difference in the whole South East Midlands LEP area by working closely with businesses and local authorities across the region to maximise the use of resources and to leverage funding. The Board of SEMLEP is listening to businesses and taking account of their needs at each of the ten stakeholder meetings taking place until the end of February.”

The draft Business Plan is available for download from the SEMLEP www.southeast midlands.org.uk along with the dates and locations for the remaining stakeholder meetings, one of which will take place at Silverstone on February 16 from 10am until noon.

Common Sense...Each of us pays taxes for their own parents' pensions. When you are a pensioner, I will have spent your contributions, just as my parents spent mine !. Neither Teddy nor I were ever 'in charge'...the politicians screwed it up (as always !). In due course, your grandchildren will, in turn, put you in the dock, accused of the same laziness andor incompetence for which you have found us guilty. what goes around......

Common sense, thank you for your rant, i,m afraid your wrong about france as the u.k has more industry than france, viva la u.k eh! I think you will find it is the politicians and the bankers who ran the country into the ground, not any particular generation, [ im a young heinz variety] However , lets get back to issue in question and i will attempt to concentrate your mind on the following, WN.D.C, N.EP. SEMLEP. [ check their websites] you will find approx 150.000 jobs promised , now the only jobs i see created are in these bodies, are they value for money? should they be forced unto WORKFARE until they get results? and i do hope their is none of those dreaded old folk you obviously despise, on them, i think you must be listening to the divide and conquer right wing government and their fellow nasty allies in the media, any other group you would like to blame, the disabled are the "in" group with the dividers.

McNabb---The older generation hasn't paid enough tax to justify or pay for the pensions being paid and promised to them. That's a lot of the problem today. Look at any photo of any protest group in Northampton , especially to do with building houses for young people and you'll see exactly who does most protesting--you've got the time to do it whilst the rest of the country is working hard, paying taxes to dissapear down the black hole of pensions. Young people haven't got jobs because your generation couldn't run the country properly when in charge and left manufacturing dissappear. Your peers in Germany and France managed to keep their industries and diverse economies. You benefited from free Universities and made money, accidently, on the back of house price inflation. The retired generation should apoligise to young people for the mess they''ve made.

Common sense, these "500" jobs , now bring the total to 80,500 jobs, hoped for, could be,s, will be,s in the past year , i think anyone would be sceptical, to say the least, i,m curious as to how you come to the conclusion its the reired and eldertly who protest most, that most certainly wasnt the case in demo,s in the in the town, nor is it with the number of young unemployed i know or for that matter other age groups, unemployment is a scourge and there has been nothing but false dawns delivered.

Common sense as an O.A.P and still a taxpayer we have every right to air our views of pie in the Sky statements made by Politcian`s that should be setting an example of taking a pay cut or at least an expenses cut but waffle on about projects which hopefully will create the 500 jobs he talks about for those that are seeking employment we as O.A.Ps have earn`t our pensions what needs to be capped are the large influx from the Common Market area`s that can be seen on the streets of every town in the Uk

Hopefully these 500 possible jobs are not wishful thinking and remember that 500 people could be inback in employment, working hard, paying taxes and helping this Town , County and Country recover. Not only will there be the direct benefit but as our population grows older we need a successful economy to continue to pay rising state pensions and healthcare costs. Ironically its the retired and elderly of the area who protest most and they should be careful about what they wish for.

You're quite correct Teddy. NBC come out with this stuff almost every week, and it's all total hot air. The only people that don't seem to understand this is The Chron that continues to publish "plans" like this in a style that indicates something is likely to happen. They must have printed well over 200 Pretty Pictures in the last few years (another one shown above!) yet The Chron fails to challange NBC as to why none of them have ever actually happened. I think we all know that by March 2013 there will have been nil jobs created, and the Northampton town center area will be unchanged from today, just maybe slightly more run down perhaps.

The Chron state "will create" the leaders states "he hopes" the people will say we have heard it all before where is the delivery?
