Jobs fear at Barclaycard as credit firm trims technology staff

DOZENS of jobs could be lost at Barclaycard’s headquarters in Northampton after the firm yesterday announced plans to cut more than 400 posts across the country.

The job cuts will hit Barclays technology and infrastructure divisions, with a total of 422 jobs facing the axe up and down the country.

The Chronicle & Echo understands the majority of the losses will hit Barclays offices elsewhere in the country, particularly in Cheshire. However, between 30 and 50 jobs could still be axed at its offices in Brackmills.

The technology division is believed to provide services for both Barclays and Barclaycard across the UK.

The firm said it would make every effort to mitigate compulsory redundancies, pointing out that the 422 job losses represented less than one per cent of its UK staff.

Barclays denied allegations from union leaders that work was being transferred to Lithuania, saying the cuts were part of “essential changes” to its technology and infrastructure division.

A spokesman said: “We need to make essential changes to our technology and infrastructure division so that we can innovate in new technologies and services for our customers and be as effective and efficient as possible.

“Whilst regrettably this will mean job losses, we will make every effort to mitigate compulsory redundancies and are working closely with Unite and impacted staff.”

The bank said it would open a voluntary redundancy register under moves to minimise compulsory job losses.

David Fleming, national officer of the Unite union, said the vast majority of the cuts would hit staff in Cheshire.

He said: “The decision by Barclays Technology to cut 422 jobs is a New Year’s blow for the staff.

“Unite has strongly opposed the sending of some of this work to Lithuania, when there are already highly-trained workers carrying out this work.

“The vast majority of jobs will be going from Radbrooke Hall, Cheshire. There will also be jobs cut in Northampton and a scattering among other sites around the country,” he claimed.

The news came after the Royal Bank of Scotland announced the loss of up to 4,760 jobs across its businesses earlier this week.

Barclaycard are well known for taking staff on and letting them go after a while ,only to hire staff again a few months later! Plenty of staff have lost their jobs and been given a package ,for the bank to take on staff later on ,why couldnt they have moved the staff around to the areas that needed staff? HERE & NOW- The agency staff are the support they need to keep the whole thing running, they are cheaper ,they can sack them on the spot without any come back.Agency staff work just as hard as the staff if not harder as sometimes they are given a job on the promise that they will be taken on full time, lie! How do I know all this ? I have worked within the Barclays Group, and other banking areas. I have been both staff and agency at both.Yes they have to pay the agencys their cuts but that not down to the staff thats down to poor management!
