Free advice is worth millions

A NORTHAMPTONSHIRE entrepreneur has been recognised for his voluntary help for young entrepreneurs in the region.

Richard Osborne, of Quick Formations, is a member of the 500-strong force of East Midlands Business Champions who volunteer their time to support the region's economic development.

He has been recognised for the exceptional contribution he made in his first year as a Champion and has been presented with a Newcomer Championing Change Award.

Since joining the initiative he has been keen to pass on the experiences he has gained as a successful entrepreneur and recently gave a talk to students at Nottingham Trent University.

Mr Osborne said: "It's all a little bit surreal!

"I'm extremely surprised and very happy to have received this award. It's great to be recognised this early on – having only joined Business Champions four months ago."

Module leader for enterprise and entrepreneurialism at the university Michael Murphy said Mr Osborne's visit was extremely productive and it was clear from students' responses they thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chairman of Business Champions Alastair Eperon presented the award. He said: "We are very proud of the work we do and the fact that we are still unique in the UK."

The awards were sponsored by Pera, Experian and Rolls-Royce and hosted by East Midlands Development Agency.

A conservative estimate of the value of the voluntary input of Champions into the region is more than 2 million per annum.
