SPORTS teams and business groups were today launching a joint campaign to drive more firms and visitors to Northampton.

Business, sport, public and private groups have come together in a bid to raise the town’s profile this Valentine’s Day with the launch of the LoveNorthampton website.

Instead of doing their own promotions, groups, including Northampton Borough Council and the Saints and Cobblers, will work together to promote the town to visitors and new businesses, at a time when shops and people are struggling against tough economic conditions.

Working together under the banner of LoveNorthampton, the idea is to make sure people know how much is going on in the town via a new website, which will go live today.

Councillor David Mackintosh (Con, Rectory Farm), leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “Now, more than ever, we need people to know what is good about Northampton.

“We have to punch our weight and can’t afford to be overlooked for investment and business by shoppers and visitors or potential students, or graduates looking for a start.

“We are home to big, international business, we’re a university town, we have world class music and theatre every day of the year, fantastic sporting teams, and amazing heritage; we need to do much more to shout about it.

“I’m proud of the fact we have all come together to make this work and kick our future off to a great start.”

But Valentine’s Day is just the beginning, as it is hoped the website will continue to grow as more businesses and organisations come on board.

Richard Clinton, director of the Northampton Town Centre BID, said: “LoveNorthampton helps us fly the flag for the town. Telling people about our vibrant arts scene and great mix of shops and restaurants is an important part of ensuring the town’s economic prosperity.

“We think everyone should know about some of the amazing things going on in Northampton and, as business people, we’re loving this new way to tell people about it.”

The website – www. lovenorthampton.co.uk – will launch with 14 offers from local businesses, and the chance to win tickets for the Saints v Wasps game on March 24 by following the Twitter feed @LoveNorthampton

Does anyone else think that some of the comments that have been posted sound contrived and over the top? "LoveNorthamptonuntildarknessfalls.com" would be a much better website name in these days of streetlights turned off and, reading today's Chron, fewer police on the streets.

I am surprised how much there is to do around Northampton. http:www.lovenorthampton.co.uk is a very good website which I have bookmarked for future use and hopefully it will be kept up to date.

Kingsthorpe Chap. I said this is the sort of campaign needed to help Northampton discover or rediscover civic pride. How unfortunate that the back-stabber Monkeytosh has any part in it.

A campaign is launched in an attempt to persuade people to actually like the town they live in...so beautifully British...wonder what those foreign jonnies, so proud of their continental towns, would make of it.

I concur with nortoftDON, potential is enormous, stepping up the process is of the essence, otherwise a lot of residents (sadly) will no longer be here. Also, ideally a music venue big enough to attract big names. Going to London or Birmingham and the cost of travel is not on. Other towns the size of Northampton manage it. Now come on the powers that be, make this town the place it should be.

So many lies on that website! Ive had yet another bike nicked, coppers werent interested, nor in the last 1. Despite the Chron reporting my mums bike being nicked & peeps ringing in the same day to say where it was, the coppers took 2 weeks to go there, & by then it was gone. Rubbish everywhere, nowhere to park, potholes everywhere (although a considerable improvement on the year before). Knocking down the ugly greyfriars to replace it with a much smaller bus station that will jam up the town & see you waiting out in the elements for half the busses, & the other half of the busses having to be caught from elsewhere, against it seems the peoples wishes. Ruined the market year on year. No shops that actually sell anything decent. Some of the highest rents outside of Lonon. Sky high council tax. All planning decisions overruled by an unelected government quango whose only purpose to exist is to line their own pockets... mmm... we have the Express Lift Tower, I like that! :)

This is the sort of campaign needed to help Northampton discover or rediscover civic pride. One doesn't have to search too far in this web site to find the way Monkeytosh and his chums spent four years rubbishing the town.

Northampton is a good town and has such great potential. Already the County Town of a great County. And even in a time of recession we are beginning to surge forward: the Waterside Enterprise Zone, new station, the Legal & General town centre investment, AvonNunn Mills offices, the proposed new Carlsberg extension and the new Brackmills wharehousing to name but a few. More deliverable early wins on employment land means more jobs and this helps fund supporting infrastructure. Our fantastic university, with Moulton and Northampton colleges and the new academies, go from strength to strength building up the skills to attract employers here. To match these developments we need more housing (in the right place) which will help generate more people to shop in the town centre and so attract bigger better shops and support those key niche retail, these give us a sense of place - Northampton has a long history and character, and we want to be take back our hard earned retail spend from MK and spend it at home - so lets back those that help the town "to up its game" . So more employment land, more housing, raised skills, early infrastructure, and support for our great Cobblers and Saints, all feeding into a renaissance of the town and its centre. And backed by pride - our Northampton Pride - I LOVE Northampton!
