Axed Barclaycard staff offered new role in India...training their replacements

Employees who could lose their jobs as a result of a cost-cutting drive at Northampton-based credit card giant Barclaycard have been offered the chance of an eight-week secondment in India, helping to train their replacements.

The Chronicle & Echo revealed last week that 140 roles in the firm's fraud department would be lost as part of the firm's plans to create a 'global centre of excellence' in India.

It has since emerged that eight people threatened with the axe will be given the chance to travel to India to help train their replacements and oversee the launch of the new centre.

One member of staff, who asked not to be named, said: "It's a bit rich to be honest. If sacking us wasn't bad enough, they then ask us if we'd like to go to India for a couple of months to help train the people that are taking our jobs."

But despite concerns about the announcement - which came only three weeks after parent company Barclays posted record profits of 11.6billion and 24 hours before it emerged UK card fraud had fallen 28 per cent in the past 12 months - Barclaycard officials said they were confident staff remained committed to the company.

Head of fraud, Vikki Williams, said: "The day after we broke the news, only three people didn't turn up for work. A lot of people have already expressed an interest in the training roles in India and they see it as an exciting opportunity."

There are currently 300 people, including temporary staff, working in the fraud department at the company's Brackmills base. That figure will be cut to 120 as a result of the changes, with approximately 22 managerial staff included in the cull.

Those that remain will tackle the most serious fraud cases, such as ID theft, and will work closely with police forces across the UK to target offenders.

Mrs Williams said: "Clearly there are some cost savings involved but our main driving force is to create a global centre of excellence in India."
