The managing director of Sywell Aerodrome wants to increase the number of business flights into the airport by small, light aircraft.
Michael Bletsoe-Brown said the aerodrome currently received about four flights a day from corporate passengers but had planning permission for up to 30 flights a day.
Mr Bletsoe-Brown said the increase in flight traffic would not require any changes to be made to the runway or the aerodrome.
He said: “I don’t think an increase in freight traffic is an option but the capture of extra business use by turbo propelled, lighter jets is very much on the cards.
“The airport was designed and built for corporate aircraft. In the economic crash in 2008 the number of flights reduced as travel reduced.”
Mr Bletsoe-Brown said businessmen and woman would be able to fly in to Sywell and be “treated like kings” rather than shunted off into a corner of a larger airport such as London Luton.
Mr Bletsoe-Brown said he believed Sywell would become a more attractive destination for corporate flights once the changes to the Midlands Main Line were completed and the journey time from Wellingborough to London was reduced.
The aerodrome opened in 1928 and during World War Two, when known as RAF Sywell, it was used as a training facility and later became an important centre for the repair of Wellington bombers. Extensive sheds from this time still remain on the site.
The leader of Northamptonshire County Council said he would welcome an increase in flight traffic to Sywell aerodrome. Councillor Jim Harker said the council would support the development of the aerodrome “within reason” as it would be a positive thing for the local economy.
Mr Harker said the completion of dual-carriageway works on the A43 would make Sywell a more attractive destination for business passengers.
