A great-grandmother from Duston was given the perfect Christmas present after winning the final £1,000 prize in the Northampton BID Golden Ticket Prize Draw.

Doreen Nichols, who has four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, entered the draw just before Christmas, posting her winning entry card in one of the gold-coloured post boxes outside Market Walk.

Doreen received the call from the Northampton BID team telling her she was the fourth winner of £1,000 of vouchers to spend in town centre businesses just before Christmas.

She said: “I didn’t know how to feel when l was told l had won, l couldn’t sleep all night thinking about it. It really has made Christmas extra special this year and has been a real talking point amongst the family as to how to spend the vouchers.

“I already have some ideas, we’d like to go on holiday and l need a new pair of glasses and a microwave. I always shop in Northampton and know the town inside out so to win this amount of money to spend in the town is just fantastic.

“My nine-year-old granddaughter Isabelle came along with me to the photocall to receive my cheque and meet the stars of the Sleeping Beauty pantomime at the Derngate theatre. She dances at the Looking Glass Theatre every week and so she was just thrilled to meet them.

“Winning this prize has made Christmas very special this year and l would like to thank Northampton BID for this wonderful opportunity.”

Sue Roberts, chairman of the Northampton Town Centre BID, said: “It’s been a privilege to see four lucky people win £1000 throughout December, the prize draw has been a real success and we hope to be able to run it next year.”
