First beer is brewed in revived Northampton Phipps brewery

The revived Phipps brewery in Northampton has started brewing beer again after a 40 year absence.

The original Phipps brewery in the town closed in 1974 and the firm’s famous India Pale Ale (IPA) disappeared from the county’s bars.

Alaric Neville, who has led the project to bring back Phipps beer since 2004, said the brewery had “come alive” when the brewing machines were restarted.

Mr Neville said: “This has been the day I have been dreaming about for 10 years.”

It is hoped that beer will be able to drink next week and will be available to buy from the start of next month.

One of the men pictured is Eric Phipps who was the brewery foreman before it closed in 1974.
