Brilliant young minds battle it in maths semi-final hosted in Northampton

Teams from Castle Academy, Queen Eleanor Primary, Abington Vale Primary, Rothersthorpe Primary, and Millway Primary, competed for a place in the final of the National Young Mathematicians' Awards.

The annual event, organised by tuition provider, Explore Learning and the NRICH Project at the University of Cambridge, stretches and inspires the minds of the country’s brightest young students, allowing them to explore their full potential and flourish beyond the classroom. Around 500 schools took part in the first round of this year’s competition.

Charlotte Gater, head of curriculum at Explore Learning, said: “The competition really stepped up a gear at this stage, and the children who have made it that far should be extremely proud. We saw some brilliant displays of teamwork and mathematical prowess up and down the country but only the very best will make it to the final next month.”

The five highest scoring teams nationally went through to the Grand Final at the University of Cambridge where children got the chance to meet TV presenter, author and broadcaster Stefan Gates who is Explore Learning’s National Young Mathematicians’ Awards Ambassador for 2016.

Those teams were St Peter’s C of E Primary School from Colchester, Greswold Primary School from Shirley, Robert Gordon’s College from Aberdeen, Far field Junior School from Borehamwood and Bilton Junior School from Rugby.
