A murder investigation has been launched by Northamptonshire Police after an elderly man was killed in his Northampton home.

Officers were called to a house in Lindsay Avenue, Abington, just after 2am on Saturday (yesterday).

At the scene, officers found that David Brickwood, aged 74, had been violently assaulted. Officers performed emergency first aid in an attempt to save Mr Brickwood’s life, but sadly he later died at Northampton General Hospital.

A major incident room has now been set up to investigate Mr Brickwood’s death, which police are treating as murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Graham, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a dreadful assault on an elderly man in his own home in the early hours of the morning.

“Fortunately, incidents of this nature are incredibly rare, and I would appeal to the public to contact us if they know anything about Mr Brickwood’s death or what may have happened in the hours leading up to this incident.”

Anyone who was in the Lindsay Avenue area in the early hours of this morning who saw or heard anything unusual is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101

Similarly, anyone who knows anything about this incident is asked to either contact the police on 101 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or use their anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
