A road in Northampton has been cordoned off after reports of a suspected gas leak caused by a damaged pipe.

About five police cars and two fire engines are currently on the scene at St James Park Road.

A spokeswoman for Northants Fire and Rescue said a cordon has been established around the suspected leak, near the UR Local newsagents, and those living in houses in the vicinity have been advised to keep windows and doors shut while investigations take place.

Engineers are currently assessing he damage to a gas pipe on the road, which is completely blocked to traffic.

Eyewitness Blake Green, who lives on the road said he saw what he believed was a type of gas billowing out of the pavement underneath a telegraph pole before police and fire arrived

He said contractors had been drilling in he area earlier today.
