Emergency services are responding to reports of a possible chemical leak at Carlsberg.

Six fire crews are currently in attendance at Carlsberg in Bridge Street, along with the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, East Midlands Ambulance Service, the Hazardous Area Response Team and Northamptonshire Police - including the Incident Command Unit.

It has now been confirmed that a man sadly died following the incident.

All the emergency services were called to the factory, which employs hundreds of people, at 12.30pm today (Wednesday).

A spokesman for Carlsberg UK said: “Earlier today there was a safety incident within the Carlsberg UK brewery on Bridge Street, Northampton.

“At this stage the emergency services are on site and are managing the situation. We will provide further updates as soon as we are in position to do so.”

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: “Police, fire and ambulance were called this afternoon at around 12.30 to the Carlsberg Factory, Northampton town centre, following reports of an industrial accident involving a possible chemical leak.

“Six fire pumps are at the location working to secure the site.

“There are no cordons around the property, and roads remain open, although motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible to reduce congestion.”

Witness, Emma Duckenfield told the Chronicle & Echo that she was heading to Argos at 1.45pm when she saw the helicopter “circle eight times before it landed.”

She said: “I saw one ambulance, six CID cars, one fire engine and a small fire truck.

“There was a pungent burning smell around the building.”

The air ambulance circled the area several times before landing near the factory.

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We are currently on scene at an incident at the Carlsberg factory in Northampton.

“Our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), who have specialist training and equipment to deal with chemical related incidents, are at the scene with several of our Northampton ambulance crews who will remain there to assess patients and support police and fire.”

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive said it is liaising with emergency services at the scene, but currently does not have an inspector on site.

Vacela, a worker at St Peters Way car wash told the Chron that one ambulance left the building which he thought was heading to the hospital.
