Awards for occupational therapy departments in Northampton and Kettering

Two Northamptonshire NHS adult mental health occupational therapy departments have received a centre of excellence award for engaging in a new practice.

The Welland Centre, located within St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, and Berrywood Hospital in Northampton won the accolade at a recent national conference for their use of the Vona Du Toit Model of Creative Ability.

Sarah Wilson, lead for impatient acute mental health occupational therapy and physiotherapy, was delighted to win the award.

She said: “It is a fantastic achievement to receive this award and I am incredibly proud of all those involved. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of the time all staff have given in implementing a new model of care for the benefit of our patients.

“Through this model of occupational therapy treatment we have been better able to identify individuals’existing ability and tailor specific programmes of treatment and interventions to support each individual establish or re­establish their function and ability, so that they can return to undertake the day to day activities that are important to them and their mental wellbeing.”
