A children’s literacy charity is appealing for reading helpers to go into schools in the Northampton area.

Latest figures show that 11 per cent of children leave primary school unable to read well.

The Beanstalk charity aims to improve the literacy levels of children by recruiting and training reading helpers, who are placed into local primary schools to provide vital one-to-one support and consistency to children who are falling behind on their reading.

Charity representative Rebecca Carter said: “We would really like to encourage those interested in supporting children with their reading to volunteer with us, you do not need any qualifications, simply share our desire to make sure more children in the area have the skills they need to succeed and believe in themselves.”
