Nathan McBain (aka Tite), 27, of Carter Avenue, Broughton, was sentenced to eight months in prison suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty to five counts of shoplifting.

Magistrates also issued McBain with a Criminal Behaviour Order, prohibiting him from entering a number of stores in the Kettering area or using abusive or threatening language or behaviour against anyone in the borough.

Northamptonshire Police applied to the court for the order after complaints that McBain continued to frequent retail premises he had been barred from and to steal and act in an anti-social manner.

Magistrates granted the order after concluding that McBain was a “prolific shoplifter who, despite being barred from a majority of stores through the Kettering Retail Crime Initiative, continues to enter stores and steal items, [and] has on occasions, acted in a manner that has caused harassment, alarm and distress to others when stealing from shops.”

They further judged the order to be necessary to ‘protect people in England and Wales from further anti–social acts by the defendant’, and it was ordered that the defendant be prohibited from using abusive, threatening, intimidating language or behaviour to any person in the borough of Kettering.

He is also banned from: any Co-op store within the borough of Kettering, Waitrose in Rushden, B & M, High Street, Kettering, M & S, High Street, Kettering, Tesco, Carina Road, Kettering, Bon Marche, High Street, Kettering, Burtons, High Street, Kettering, Top Shop, High Street, Kettering, Iceland, Newland Street, Kettering, TK Maxx, Newland Centre, Kettering, Sainsbury’s, Rockingham Road, Kettering and Newland Centre Management, Newland Street, Kettering.

Sergeant Nathan Murray said: “McBain has caused a public nuisance in and around Kettering town centre.

“Despite being barred from many stores, he has continued to enter them and his offending and anti-social behaviour has had a significant impact on local retailers and their customers.

“Securing this Criminal Behaviour Order means we can prevent further issues and any breach of this order will be treated extremely seriously.”

Breaching the order is a criminal offence, for which McBain could be sent to prison.

Posters and leaflets will be distributed around Kettering to ensure members of the public and businesses are aware of the prohibitions. The order is in place until November 30, 2018.
