The void appeared in Victoria Street in the Upper Mounts earlier this week and police signs were placed around it on Tuesday.

The National Express coach stop sits around 150 metres along the road by the Upper Mounts car park.

Drivers had noticed a slight dip in that part of the road, which joins the junction with Church Lane, before the hole appeared.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council, said engineers were assessing the problem.

He said: “Northamptonshire Highways is aware of the hole that has developed in Victoria Street, Northampton, and barriers have been put in place to ensure the safety of the public.

“We are currently investigating the cause and have also reported the issue to Anglian Water.”

Anglian Water say they are unaware of any issue in the area.

In April last year an 8ft sinkhole opened up in Earl Street by the Charles Bradlaugh pub - just 200 yards away from the mystery hole on Victoria Street.

A car had just driven over the stretch of Earl Street before it collapsed into a deep trench.
