A business supplies company has today announced a proposal to close its Northampton site by the end of the year,
Office Depot, on the Brackmills Industrial Estate, is currently occupied by one of the firm’s distribution centres, its furniture transport operation and a customer services centre.
All on-site staff were informed today about the proposal, which places 191 employees at risk of redundancy and the company said a workplace consultation is now underway.
An Office Depot spokeswoman said it “must address challenges to remain relevant in the marketplace and ensure a sustainable business for the future.”
She added =: “The plans would enable Office Depot to take advantage of the efficiencies it has created in its other UK distribution centres (in Manchester and Leicester), which offer a highly-automated ‘pick & pack’ operation.”
If the closure goes ahead, the company will create 111 new additional jobs at its Manchester and Leicester sites.
John Moore, the company’s UK & Ireland managing director, said: “We are very clear that we must maintain a sustainable, customer-focused business for the future. However, this proposal has involved a number of difficult decisions and we understand the impact these changes would have on our Northampton-based employees and their families.
“We will provide support to employees who wish to relocate, as well as practical training, advice and help for those looking for alternative employment.”
