Fans of the abandoned Northampton Balloon Festival will not miss out this summer after organisers of a community event in Wootton revealed it would have its own display.
The third annual Walk in the Park event, at Wootton Community and Sports Centre, in Curtlee Hill, will feature three balloon crews at the two-day festival, which will now include two evening balloon glows and an early-morning balloon launch.

Stewa
rt Bartley, Wootton and East Hunsbury parish councillor, has been in charge of organising the event after its inaugural year, when the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed at the community centre, costing the authority £36,000.

Mr Bartley said: "It's really good news. I think the balloon festival is going to be missed so every opportunity to launch a few balloons will help.

"The fact of the matter is the balloonists wanted to launch from somewhere.

"It also gives us a slightly different angle to work from and we're trying to get a few more. Even if the weather lets us down, at least we'll get the glow out of them."

The summer event, which will take place on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, will also include a performance from X-Factor finalist, Laura White, as well as an evening of tribute bands to Girls Aloud, Take That and Christina Aguilera.

Organisers have encouraged school groups to get involved with the community event, which will be raising money for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

Mr Bartley said members of a youth project at Blacky More would be taking to the stage during the weekend, which last year attracted 3,000 people.

Entry to the event on Saturday, July 4 is free but the tribute night on Friday is by ticket-only, costing £8 for adults, £5 for children or £24 for a family ticket.

How on earth do these events get authority and other funding as well as good positions in newspapers and other online media when a close friend of mine is bringing in hundreds of people to the town that have never visited before for a didgeridoo music festival that he alone is having to fully self fund, organise and promote?

And he gets NO support from any official door he knocks on especially from the northants arts or anything art related, the chron etc etc as they arnt interested in helping!!!

Surely he is doing more for the northampton tourist trade than others that get funding??

Theres something very wrong in the way this town is managed and promoted unless you are in the right set or clique!!

Im not knocking the new balloon festival as I think its a great idea, I would rather see 2 balloons than none!

It just annoys me to see others who try and try their best and always seem to be knocked back when they try so arrange something good in northampton?

Where is this village Wootton? Could it be the sprawling new estate surrounding Caoline Chilsolm school just about to join Northampton with thousand of new houses to Quinton, Preston Deanery, Hackleton, Horton destroying the countryside, clogging up the roads, flooding eveywhere downstream of it and all the Financial gain going to rural Towcester whilst Northampton deals with all the urban problems?

Well done to this bunch and everyone who organises events in the town, let's show the borough council that it is actually possible to run them successfully.
Maybe we could have a coordinated display across the town, with balloons coming to individual events run by community groups.

I say Well done & hope it will be successful. Its'
certainly a good location for this type of event.
Never could understand why the Racecourse was ever
chosen for the Balloon Festival anyway - its' all so
hemmed in. It certainly looked it!
To anyone else trying to organise events in Northampton
- very well done & hope they will be well supported.
