Turbine power at Northampton college

A team of eight students from Northampton College have been generating their own clean energy by constructing a miniature wind turbine as part of a nationwide skills challenge.
The electro-technical students completed their mission in two-and-a-half hours as part of Colleges Week, a new national initiative which encourages learners to put skills to the test.
Students constructed a metre wide wind turbine and a six-metre high scaffold tower to mount the rotating machine.
Lecturer Chris Blakey said: "As part of Colleges Week, we wanted to come up with an exciting challenge which would test the students' practical skills and understanding of renewable energy sources used to generate electricity.
"The competition also tested their knowledge of safety procedures and working at heights. We had sufficient wind sources on the day to power a row of low energy, low voltage lamps, to give a visual representation of the electricity being generated."
Colleges Week celebrates the role colleges play in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of learners.
