The Royal & Derngate theatre has hosted the European premiere of a recently re-discovered Tennessee Williams play.
Spring Storm made its continental debut last night and will run in rotation with Eugene O'Neill's Beyond the Horizon until Saturday November 14.
Spring Storm is set in a small Mississippi town full of small-minded gossips and people brimming with life and was written when Williams was a playwriting student at Iowa University. It was found among his papers in 1999 and this is the first time it has been staged outside America.
Laurie Sansom, artistic director of Royal & Derngate, has assembled a talented young cast including Liz White, who is best known as Annie in BBC TV's Life on Mars.
He said: "The Young America season is exceptional – two plays that have rarely or never been seen before in Britain, by playwrights who would go on to write masterpieces of the American theatre."
