A former property consultant has been given the six-figure salary job of heading the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC).
Peter Mawson, who has previously been chief executive of property consultants Donaldson LLP and operation director of real estate advisors DTZ Holdings, will start work with the Northamptonshire development organisation in August.

He said: "I hope to make a real contribution to the immense challenge of delivering significant growth in a sustainable, sensitive manner, and so allow Northampton, Daventry and Towcester to realise their full potential."

The WNDC was set up to push forward the development of more than 40,000 houses across Northampton, Daventry and Towcester by 2021.

The group's former chief executive, town planner Mike Hayes, left his £117,000-a-year post in September, three months after being awarded a CBE for his services to local government and the voluntary sector.

As well as his experience in real estate and property, Mr Mawson was also a principal planner and chief development surveyor with the Telford Development Corporation during the 1980s.

He is also a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Town Planning Institute.

The WNDC's chairman, John Markham, said: "We've been determined to find the right person for what is a challenging and pivotal position – not just for WNDC, but also for the sub-region of west Northamptonshire as it moves into an exciting period of growth and regeneration.

"I believe Peter has the skills, expertise and drive that will make a positive difference to the people living in Northampton, Daventry and Towcester in the future."

The exact amount which will be paid to the new chief has not been revealed, but the organisation has confirmed it will be a "competitive six figure package".

Hope this guy improves WNDC, as they are one of the worst run organizations I have ever come across. Not to mention most of the decision makers do not even live in the county.

Consistently one of the worst planning departments in the country. At least soem fo the old guard is leaving they are about as useful as a pensioner with dementia since they are stuck int heir 1960s ways.

In the current climate the 'competitive' package would certainly have to be less than the £117,000 they were paying before. Do we think it is?

The Countess and I think that the best way that this highly paid fella could earn his corn would be to wind the up the whole darn thing as soon as possible.
It has turned out to be Central Government's Poodle.
These planning functions should be returned to Local Government Democracy. If the voters think that their representatives are not standing up for the best interests of Northampton, they can give them the order of the boot, rather than of the "British Empire", as a leaving present.
This whole thing needs to be more open, transparent, and democratic. If need be why not have direct public elections to the WNDC if it has to remain in place?

As long as democratic doesn't mean directing it through the Councils or giving them more sway. I think in that respect it is a good thing. The more they are kept out of it the better. They should represent the people and make sensible decisions... need I go on?

WNDC doesn't deliver services - that is the Councils. A few district councils around here do a fair job but not NBC or NCC.

Elections!?! - we have them for our beloved Borough and County Councils. Proof if there ever was that elections aren't working, and party politics serves it's own ends (as do most politicians). Independent candidates who have a brain and a conscience are what is needed. As for WNDC my view is democratic means talking to the people, listening, understanding, and providing what they need in the long-term. That means a solid economy and a place we want to live in and be proud of.
