Shopping street becomes treacherous ice rink

Shoppers were treading carefully after red tape left the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Northampton town centre like an ice rink.
Northampton Borough Council was expected to grit the street yesterday afternoon after a number of complaints were made by angry shoppers who slipped and tripped at lunchtime.

But the work was bizarrely put on hold because staff at the borough council were not given the green light to do the work by their opposite numbers at County Hall.

Angry town centre shopper, Derrick Holden said: "When I went down, there were one or two dry patches, but in a lot of places it was really bad.

"I had to nip into the library and it was really icy outside there, I'm not surprised people were slipping and sliding about.

"For pensioners like myself it was really hazardous."

During the daytime, many shoppers struggled to stay upright on ice which ran from the centre of Abington Street to the top.

Some teenagers even took advantage of the treacherous conditions by making an improvised ice-slide.

After receiving complaints, the county council said it would ask workers from the Guildhall to clear the street.

At about 3.30pm, a spokesman for the county council said: "Now we've been made aware of the problems of ice in the town centre, the county council is working with our colleagues at the borough to make sure the work is carried out."

But as shoppers were heading home at 5.30pm, the borough council said it could not do the work because it had not yet received the go-ahead from the county council.

Workers were however due to visit the street today to remove the town's Christmas trees.

Lights on the imitation trees were due to be turned off tonight, as today is twelfth night, traditionally the day decorations are removed.

This says it all about NBC and NCC.
They can't deal with a small, but important to the citizens of Northampton, issue. What hope for the future of the town and county when it's future requires co-operation,agreement and planning for the future between these self important jobs worths? They have forgotten they are here to serve the people not the other way around!

What do we expect the Councillors were out spending their large pay increase that they rewarded themselves with because they are over worked
When are they going to resign and let intelligent people take up the positions who know when a cold snap is due and make Gritting people aware of whats required
We will now see large bills to be paid out for compensation, which only adds to high increases in Council Tax for 2009/10

I agree the Council is a farce but can't we cope with a little ice in this country any more? Another ten years and will we see complaints that the council didn't put the umbrellas out and people got wet?

The street cleaners should be clearing the snow then gritting the paths in town, and other residential areas. After all they can't sweep the streets, not that we see any of that anyway,in my area.At least with the snow the area looks much nicer, hiding all the rubbish that has been rotting in the gutters for months!

I am concerned about the risk to children of the ice in school zones where children dodge traffic and parked vehicles twice daily. Maybe there should be a complete assessment of particular ice danger areas. At least it will give a few hours of warm, coffee fuelled committee meetings while the budget is discussed.

How embarrasing! You couldn't make it up really. I would imagine that meeting after meeting had to take place prior to doing anything. How come Gold Street road and paths were gritted and thats closed!!!
