Rush-hour traffic in Northampton suffered huge chaos this morning as the A45 was closed in both directions when a lorry transporter lost control and hung perilously over the edge of a flyover in the town.
The incident happened at about 7.40am this morning when the trailer from an articulated lorry turned over on the Brackmills roundabout above the westbound carriageway.

The driver of the lorry was not injured but the trailer, loaded with electrical goods such as fridges and freezers, was left in a precarious position.

Police reopened the A45 in both directions in the Brackmills/Barnes Meadow area around 11am, although considerable congestion was still seen around the town.

But shortly after that, a four-car shunt took place at the Barnes Meadow interchange, while the traffic lights failed at Queen Eleanor roundabout to add to the problems.

Cars queued back as far as Wellingborough, causing many motorists to be late for work.

Barclaycard employee Emily Brigson, aged 22, of Kingsley, Northampton, was just under one hour late for work.

She said: "It was so frustrating, my dad dropped me off and it's lucky he did because otherwise I would have had to wait even longer. In

"Because it was so bad he dropped me off at a roundabout and I had to walk."

Two recovery trucks with cranes were used to haul the trailer back onto the bridge.

Several washing machines and freezers also spilled out onto the road.

Has the UK Health and Safety gone mad? Another case of a major road closed in both directions when there appears to be no sane reason? The pictures and article in the Chron today showed the HGV vehicle, which turned its trailer over on the Brackmills bridge above the A45 bypass. I would like to know what the justification was for closing the road in both directions and causing even more disruption to traffic in Northampton during rush hour? It seems to me either the Police or health and safety overact in these situations with total disregard for the public, who incidentally pay their wages. Is this not the reason why they are called public servants? In France this would never happen and Police would be out in force moving traffic on and pushing "eye-ballers" to get moving. They even do this on Motorways where there is a fatality, yet in the UK there seems to be a culture of - oh let's just close the whole road and who cares about industry getting to work to make money to pay their wages. It is a disgrace when something like this happens and the so called "Traffic Police" do not seem to do their job and speedily get traffic moving and set up sensible diversions. If anyone has seen the pictures, maybe you could justify the Southbound A45 section being shut to make safe but there was no interference or danger above the North section whatsoever. Is it not about time there was strict accountability for decisions like this?

It does seem a bit excessive, but the police would soon have copped it if a fridge had fallen off onto a car going under the bridge!

I think your comment is totally unacceptable, the police and other services do what they can to make the roads safer for the public. What would you rather, have a heavy electrical good fall on top of your car or be safe and take the long way?? You have taken total disregard towards the emergency services procedures and that is unfair, instead of moaning maybe you should praise them for all they do for our communities, and maybe will do for you in the future.

It's not just that something may fall from the bridge and kill a passing motorist, if you allowed traffic to continue most if not all would spend their time looking up at the lorry and would innevitably cause another accident on that carriageway too, then the delays would be even worse not to mention the possibility of injury or death, then what would the comments on the action of the police be? The Police do not want to close roads just for the sake of it as it causes them many difficulties too. I'm sorry people were late for work but surely it's better to arrive late and alive!

when will the police run a speed test on this piece of road
each time i travel on this section and reduce my speed to 60 M.P.H I`m the slowest vehicle on it and many times get flashed by vehicles because i have reduced my speed to the restricted limited
some vehicles must be travelling at over 80 M.P.H

Next time it happens we'll ask the dibble to let Mr Rhodes pass through, and when he has a 40 tonne truck land on his bonnet he'll know why it was closed.

With Mr Rhodes on this one.... well most of it.

The lorry was not affecting most of the road so no need to close it in both directions. And as for the comment about people trying to look at the incident from the other side and causing accidents.... you CANNOT close a road cause some numpties are not driving properly and not looking where they are going!!!!

What next??? we erect huge barriers along each side of every road in the UK in case some idiots don't look in the direction they are supposed to be looking?

As usual in this country the police/council bring in measures that affect everyone just because of some numpties that are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. It's EVERONE'S responsibility to drive properly and not be looking up at some bridge because they might see something interesting!

Why do the majority ALWAYS have to suffer just because the minority are not doing what they are supposed to be doing ie driving safetly????

We cannot wrap everyone in cotton wool.

Instead of blaming the police why doesn't everyone blame the lorry driver, or the loaders, what made it tip over? excessive speed, incorrectly loaded goods or both? maybe you could send your invoices for loss of earnings to the company or driver who really caused the delays, and stop blamingthe emergency services for ensuring your safety? Usually the "Numpties" who aren't watching where they are going cause accidents injuring or killing innocent law abiding people who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe one lane could have been allowed to flow but that's up to the professionals to decide. Amazing how we all become authorities on matters we have no training in?

I too think they should investigate why the lorry came to be there and prosecute if necessary and maybe fine the company.

Let's get one thing straight they are not doing all this just to ensure our safety anymore, they are going over the top to cover their ar*es in case something else happens and they get sued!

I am not blaming the police at all to be honest. I think if they were left to do their job as they see fit ie using common sense (and all that training they receive), then this would not happen. But instead they get rules and regulations from the council/government about how they have to do everything and so cannot do their job without thinking about way over the top health and safety rules and regulations first.

I don't think you need to be trained to see if it's safe to drive down a road.......then agin we have training courses for absolutely everything nowadays so I wouldn't be suprised if there was a 3 day course (run by the government and paid by us, obviously) on whether a road is safe or not!!!!

I actually feel sorry for the emergency services having to work within all these rules....supposedly to help us and keep us safe!!!!! yeah right!
