Rush-hour chaos as beer spillage closes motorway

Tailbacks of up to 20 miles were experienced on the M1 in Northamptonshire this morning after a lorry overturned to spill thousands of cans of extra-strong lager all over the road.
Drivers suffered lengthy rush-hours delays following the spillage just after junction 18 of the northbound carriageway.
Despite all three lanes being closed, motorists were able to use the slip road and re-enter the motorway but a spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said long delays were experienced.
Two lorries were believed to have been involved in the collision just before 7am.
A quantity of alcohol leaked onto the carriageway and officials from the Environment Agency were called out over concerns it could seep into the water course.
A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said the driver was unhurt but cans of nine per cent extra-strong lager, and half of the lorry, had blocked all three lanes.
Southbound all three lanes were moving slowly as drivers tried to see what is happening.
The cans were cleared away by firefighters from Long Buckby and rescue teams using brooms, and the motorway was re-opened later this morning.
