Police patrols will be stepped up at a Northampton park after a vicious and sustained assault, which left one victim with a broken jaw.
A woman and her friend were walking through Abington Park when they were approached by their two attackers, who started punching and kicking them after asking for cigarettes.

Northamptonshire Police said the assault lasted about five minutes and o
nly ended when the attackers were disturbed by witnesses, who said they would call the police.

Det Sgt Julie Gallagher said: "This was a nasty attack which left a 20-year-old woman with a broken jaw.

"We will be stepping up patrols in the area and we will work extremely hard to track down who has done this."

Tony Ansell, who runs Abington Park Cafe, said summer in the park had been quite peaceful but added he was not surprised by the latest attack.

He said: "The problem is that a year ago we had six borough council park wardens, and now we have just one.

"If there were more wardens and more police on duty in the park, this sort of thing would be a lot less likely."

The assault took place at about 8pm on Wednesday, close to the park's bandstand.

The first man was of mixed race while the second was black. Both were aged about 19.

Councillor Brendan Glynane, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for community safety, said: "The borough council's rangers patrol the council's parks and green spaces to monitor and report on any maintenance issues. The council does everything in its powers to keep our parks safe and attractive."
