It will be more than a year until Matt Smith walks through the Tardis doors and onto British screens as Doctor Who for the first time.
But the makers of Doctor Who action figures have announced they will make a plastic likeness of the 26-year-old Northampton actor to accompany his onscreen incarnation, the eleventh Doctor.

Neil Ross Russell, managing director of BBC Worldwide Children's and Licensing, said: "We're thrilled about the announcement of Matt Smith as the new Doctor not least because of the opportunities it gives our creative team and licensees.

"Doctor Who is a long term priority for us as a commercial business and with Matt on board, we will be looking to develop a new style guide with fresh creative elements to inspire our licensing partners."

As well as figures of Doctor Who, the current range includes his companion Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate, and the Timelord's foes the Daleks and the Cybermen.

And cartoons have appeared online of Matt as the Doctor in front of the Tardis. The images by artist Darren Lacey are some of the first to appear of the 11th Time Lord.

Ok here's the deal...this guy might be local to us, but he's an unknown actor to most of us...he may well have had bit-parts previously, but the majority of us have NEVER heard of him.
How do you know what he'll be like as the new doctor until he actually proves himself he is worthy of the role?
I feel alot of hype around something not yet proven to us dedicated Dr Who followers

All the actors who play the Doctor have to go through the same problem of being better than the previous... I feel sory for Peter Davidson who had to follow Tom Baker.

I am sure Matt Smith will do well, I am hoping that he will be a DARKER Doctor Who personally with a nice quirky attitude.... by the way he wiggles his hands and fingers about in the interview it should be entertaining still:) It all comes down to the stories at the end of the day though.
