The Indian restaurant at the centre of a copyright battle with easyGroup has invited the firm's founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, to its relaunch after agreeing to change its name.

The owners of easyCurry in Sol Central drew the attention of the country's media after initially standing up to the company, which owns easyJet and easyMoney.

The organisation reportedly objected to the word "easy", the orange colouring and typeface in the restaurant's signs and adverts.

Naz Uddin, a spokesman for easyCurry, said he would invite Stelios to the relaunch once a new name had been chosen.

"Realistically speaking, we could potentially end up keeping the word 'easy' and that's the biggest issue, but what they're saying is by the time we get to the end of that route, we will end up spending so much money," Mr Uddin said.

"What we're going to do now is let the people decide what we call ourselves. It's going to take a week or 10 days before the sign guy can come in and do all that, but it will be as soon as we can.

"Obviously, I can't change it overnight and I'm trying to be as helpful as I can with them."

Mr Uddin said he felt he had no choice but to back down and agree to change the name, after originally offering to alter the colours and the typeface.

The easyGroup has declined to comment on the case, but reiterated its policy on "brand thieves" to ensure the "public aren't misled by people or businesses passing themselves off as being part of easyGroup."

Well what a surprise - it was blatent copyright! Of course they had to back down. There is no way that they thought of and designed their logo without the intention of pretending they were bigger than they are.

i agree, although i doubt this was done with malicious intent, i find it hard to believe that this was just a matter of coincidence. (the logos being simular)

If anything that was a great advertising technique, starting something that's obviously going to get pointed out. Now EasyCurry and it's location has gained some free advertising in the local paper. Good Job!

Totally agree with the previous four comments.

What an astute piece of marketing by easycurry!

If I started a hairdressing salon with an orange logo that read "easyCut" it would not be some co-incidental oversight on my part but a blatant attempt to hijack existing advertising. Maybe the leader of our council could get some sponsored cars for his councillors with the orange logo "easyRipoff" on the side? Steve Riches.

Free Marketing?

So called ‘easycurry’ will have to pay for the redesign and printing of their signs, logo’s menus and stationary.

Plus affirm to the easygroup via their solicitor ( another cost) that these changes have been made and that they understand their error.

Any other advsertidng they may have undertaken using the name ‘easycurry’ will need to be removed from the press or taken down.

The cost of all of this is not free.

How the hell did Tony Woods become leader of Northampton Borough Council? The guy is an idiot if he thinks its ok to rip off someone elses brand and he shouldn't be in charge of anything.

So what if Easy group are a big company with a lot of money, they were probably the "small guy" once.

No wonder our town has its problems if this half wit is the best of the bunch.

It may not be 'free' marketing once you take into account the costs involved but I am sure that the publicity they have had (Chron, Radio Northampton and Northants 96 and maybe others) far outweigh these costs.

Like I said before, I am sure it was an astute business decision by the owners.

By the way, Tony Woods really should not have commented like he did, it does not really show him in good light.

Tony Woods never shows himself in a good light.

I don't believe for one second the people behind the business thought they would get this kind of publicity from it. If they were that smart, they could have come up with their own branding and advertising without having to resort to deceiving the public and using someone elses reputation.

Besides, it's not exactly positive promotion is it.
