More than 500 fans screamed and cheered as Michael Jackson tribute artist Navi performed for them outside Weston Favell Shopping Centre in tribute to the late King of Pop.
Families arrived in droves to see the act on Saturday, the appeal of which clearly crossed the generation divide, with toddlers and grandparents alike tapping their feet and singing along to Michael Jackson's greatest hits.

The act had already been scheduled months ago, and manager of the shopping centre Kevin Legg said it had to be moved outside and a stage promptly set up to allow more space as there was no way of predicting how many fans would come to show their appreciation of the pop star after news of his death broke.

Mr Legg said: "It was just fate that we booked Navi before Michael Jackson's tour started, and the recent events just changed it totally from a small community event where about 200 people turned up -– and whoever happened to be shopping – into this.

"In a very short amount of time we have turned this around for the people of Northampton. I would like to join the many people in expressing my condolences to Michael Jackson's family and friends."

The act was preceded by a minute's silence where everyone bowed their heads to think about the star, before Navi performed all his greatest hits, including Thriller, Billie Jean, Bad and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', including all the classic Michael Jackson dance moves.

The singer even got fans up on stage to demonstrate their own dance moves, some of whom had a go at the moonwalk.

Mum-of-three Lisa Drew, aged 27, of Thorplands, Northampton, said: "He's really good. I'm a big Michael Jackson fan, I was devastated to hear he had died. I was listening to his top 40 hits and every one of them is a really good tune.

"Navi's singing isn't quite as good but everything else is fantastic."

Fan Sally Taylor, aged 43, of Spinney Hill, Northampton, was also at the gig with her daughters Amy, aged 16, and Hannah, 14.

She said: "He is absolutely brilliant. It's weird that we were going to come anyway and then a few days before, he died.

"We love Michael Jackson, I grew up in the 80s and my daughters grew up listening to him too."

500 screaming pathetic people cheering for a phony pretender more like it.
If this idiot is going to spend his life looking and acting like someone he is not and people are going to fall for it you all need to GET A LIFE.
Truth is coming out he took unprescribed painkilling drugs,he was still alive when his dr found him...not breathing but had a faint pulse...his dr spent 45 mins trying to revive him...if that is the case he would have been a vegetable if he would have lived.
He was doing these shows to pay off all his debts...he must have realised he couldn't do it with all his pain..........?????

Hardly a phony pretender when he has been his look alike and decoy for 25 years, and he looks and sounds just like him. It was a tribute to him and his music, have some respect!

Facts or not... people were enjoying themselves by seeing someone perform and to listen to his music. That doesnt mean they need to get a life or are pathetic.

This Micheal Jackson spoof will now be moonwalking all the way to the bank with his tribute act, there are many many tribute bands out there and they are all there for one purpose and that is too make money, they may pass themselves off as trying to make his music and image live on......but lets face it there is no need for that he was one of the most recognised faces on planet earth.

you have your choice if you want to go and pay your money to go and see this wannabe, that is entirely up to you,he is ready to line his pockets with your hard earned,i would much rather go and buy a couple of DVD'S and see the real thing over and over again.

I never really liked Micheal jacksons work thats not because its no good its because i was never into that type of stuff, but if you liked it and you are willing to shell out to line this Navvis pockets go ahead.

That is why everyone got into him was his 2 minute moonwalk 20 some years ago...big fchen deal people....oh and the fact he sprouted himself as being mental so all these young mental freaks had someone to look up to.
Navi is no good anyone who makes money off of someone else is no good, maybe he can follow michael jackson...get yourself some Demerol and Oxicontin and moonwalk with him.
Get a real job and life.

I left the UK some 18 months ago and regularly (albeit sadly) look at the online Chronicle to see what is going on in my old hometown.
I sometimes read people's comments but have never posted before now.....but Michael S....your ploy worked.
You clearly are on here to aggravate and annoy people with much of your babble not relating to anything resembling common sense.

Michael Jackson - whether liked or not - was a global star. Not because of him being "mental" as you so eloquently put it, but because his music influenced millions of people.
Everybody has problems and everybody makes mistakes - fortunately for you your mistakes are only witnessed by a handful of people and you are not internationally flogged by the media. I wonder how you would cope with the media attention in full force, and what coping mechanisms you would develop to get through your days. Look at the public response to your bitter diatribes if you want to look into a glass ball for a reality check.

It is a pity that it took for Michael to die for people to realise just how sick he really was.

To wish someone else the same fate is disgusting, immature and I am now quite pleased that I have left the town behind.....especially if you are indicative of the quality of its residents. Thankfully, I know better - and know there are some very decent people that live in Northampton.

Show some humanity.

I agree with you "red in sydney"...finally someone speaks some sence.

The show at Weston Favell was free, so dont be going on that people are sad for paying to see him. People were dancing, singing and enjoying themselves, whats so wrong with that. Some people are so negatvie.
