A dangerous Northamptonshire road on which two people have died in road accidents needs urgent traffic calming to avoid more deaths, an MP has said.
The road which links Wootton to the village of Hartwell has seen two fatalities in recent years and the latest in a long string of serious car accidents on the route happened last month.

Brian Binley, the Conservative MP for Northampton South, has
been lobbied by concerned villagers who live near the route and is now calling for urgent action to be taken by Northamptonshire County Councillors. He said: "As recently as June 1, there was yet another accident.

"This is another example proving that the Wootton to Hartwell Road is extremely dangerous.

"It is obvious there is a real need to review what action might be taken to slow down traffic and improve the road from a safety perspective.

"We need to act now to save lives or the situation will only get worse."
Stephen O'Riordan, aged 50, died of his injuries at Northampton General Hospital after he was hit by a Ford Sierra in Hartwell Road, Quinton, in March. Quinton Parish Council said at the time that it had tried to introduce traffic calming measures over that stretch of road for a number of years, but with limited success.

And 64-year-old grandmother Marlene Broadbent was killed in 2007 in a head-on collision just metres away in Wootton Road.

Mr Binley said he wants to see improved signage, increased police patrols, the possibility of using mobile cameras at accident hotspots, and if necessary, road engineering.

The call follows representations from Quinton Parish Council to Mr Binley.
It believes the very narrow road is used as a rat-run to Milton Keynes by lorries and commuters.

Mr Binley has written to the deputy county roads boss, Councillor Michael Clarke (Con, Hackleton) asking him and the council to look into the problems and to take the necessary action.

Cabinet member for roads Heather Smith (Con, Prebendal) said: "If there's an issue with serious accidents involving injuries, and particularly deaths, I can assure you we will look into it."

The Countess and I assume that Councillor Michael Clarke, newly elected to NCC, is the same Michael Clarke who writes such fawning letters to the Chron about Binley MP, particularly in support of his creative approach to Parliamentary Expenses.
No doubt Mr Clarke, who was immediately elevated to number two honcho in what is a new portfolio made up of the portfolios of the defenestrated duo of Ben Smith and Bob Seery, will do Binner's bidding ASAP. After all, "Captain Charisma" Harker always espouses preference for spending money outside the County Town.
The Countess says she hates to think what it will be like if "Sunny Jim" and his other 55 Tory boys and girls have another pop at going for a single unitary authority for the County.
Hudson has just appeared with some fresh coffee and croissants. "Northampton will be doomed if that happens", he bellows, "they don't give a fig for for anywhere other than the shire areas"

Tory MP writes to Tory Councillor to ask why the Tories are not acting on Roads?

Tory Parish Council says its asked the Tory County Council to do something for years but they haven't done anything so they wrote to the Tory MP to get him to write to them

A different Tory Councillor replies stating the blindingly obvious.

No action taken but a bit of self promoting press is achieved, and the lesson.

If you have a Tory Parish Council, a Tory District Council and Tory District and County Councillors and a Tory District and County Council and a Tory MP you still get nothing done, but the family of the poor bloke who died can take comfort that they are all writing to each other in order to pass the buck!

We are relaxing by the pool and Ricky, our new young member of staff from London, has just spotted Spirit of Bradlaugh's posting above.
"Nice one!" he exclaims.
We at Upney Hall are in agreement, and the Countess is smiling demurely.
We all await the next set of chain letters from the Tory Junta of Northamptonshire, that some now refer to as "Propaganda is Us"

Isn't it poor drivers who make roads dangerous? Speeds and standards of driving in Northamptonshire is pretty appalling. Look around, there are some sad sad people out there who think their cars are status symbols and driving fast is clever. They should get a life and not take innocent lives with their pathetic showing off.

You can add to that, the Tory MP was until recently one of the Tory county councillors who did nothing that said Tory MP is now complaining about.

That's a long term strategy – ignore an issue for years, stand down, and then complain nothings been done to plump yourself up in another role.

So Mr Binley wants "to slow down traffic and improve the road from a safety perspective". And this from a convicted speeding motorist!!

Look in the mirror Brian before openeing your mouth, and try to follow your own sermon in future.

Spirit of Bradlaugh,

Glass Half full, thanks for that it reminds how he said to the judge at the time the following:

He claimed he would find it difficult to pay for a driver or taxis on his annual MP's salary of £59,000, his allowance as a county councillor of £7,000 and the monies he received as a non-executive director of the firm he set up, BCC Marketing, which totalled £8,000 a year.

But Matthew Brookes-Baker, for the Crown Prosecution Service, asked Mr Binley how much of a stake he still held in the company and how much his personal savings amounted to.

Binley told him that he owned a 20 per cent stake in the private limited company, but refused to disclose the sum of his personal savings in open court and handed a note with the amount on to Judge Richard Bray.

Asked by Mr Brookes-Baker if he could not comfortably afford taxis or a private car for six months, Mr Binley said:

"I could pay, but the money I earn is taxable money and I have to pay for a family, keep two homes and being an MP costs a great deal of money."

But now we know that the fees office were paying for the upkeep of his second home! Even though his own company owned it! These allowances were also untaxed.

And as for not being able to afford taxis and telling the judge how hard up he was that the fees office were paying his taxis too!

So did he perjure himself in front of the judge in order to try and save his skin?

It looks that way to me.

This whole story stinks and I think it should be looked at in more detail

Thank you previous posters all.
The Countess and I are just reminding ourselves of how many embarrassing moments Binley MP has caused for his Party and his unfortunate constituents.
We hope that there is what we believe is called a "techie" somehere who could pass all the records of these many indiscretions to "Lord Snooty" Cameron and his pals.
Who knows, he might rid us of this turbulent MP.
Our good friend Spirit of Bradlaugh has a point concerning possible perjury, perhaps someone litigious might pursue it.
The Countess wonders if "Spirit" is going to throw his "titfer" in the ring against "Bungling" Binley at the election. It might of course collide with her tiara, but what fun!
The East London patois for a hat is something we have picked up from the ever enjoyable Ricky (please see posting number 3 above).
Upney Hall is enjoying this South of France style weather, and number 2 chauffeur Clarkson has discovered the Bristol Viotti 407 V8 convertible that I have been hiding for some time. I have told him that as soon as insurance is arranged he can take us for a run around the country lanes. Should we notify Clarke and Binley in advance? We wouldn't like Binners to set off in pursuit in his lesser Jaguar and get booked agan. Or would we? All together now......"

The road's not dangerous - it's totally benign and doesn't care.

It's the drivers that are dangerous - treat a public road like Santa Pod and people will come a cropper.

I know this road well and fail to see where the police can safely set up mobile cameras anywhere near either of the 2 recent crash sites.

Oh, Mr Binley, we're not allowed to say "blackspot" now, because it has negative racist connotations. So we're told.

The only thing dangerous about our roads is the people who repeatedly break the law demonstrating a blatent disregard for the safety of other road users - people such as Brian Binley.
