One of Northampton's top politicians has blasted nightclub bosses for promoting a twice-weekly all-you-can-drink student night, branding their actions "disgraceful".
Sally Keeble, Labour's MP for Northampton North, made the comments about a £7.99 all-you-can-drink student night running every Monday and Wednesday at Groove in Gold Street, Northampton.

The night is promoted with the tagline: "Get yourself on the
guestlist, get in for only £7.99 and drink as much as you like!"

Mrs Keeble, who has been campaigning for a minimum price for alcohol units for a number of years, said she planned to speak to nightclub bosses about the promotion.

She said: "It's completely cynical, targeting the most vulnerable section of the market, which is young people who may be away from home, unsupervised, for the first time. It's completely disgraceful.

"If they continue with this, everyone else has to undercut them to compete and before we know it there will be nights like this every night where people can get blind drunk in Northampton for a minimum price, which is not good news for the town centre."

Experts from Drinkaware, the safe drinking campaigners, also criticised the nightclub, which uses the line "Groove promotes responsible drinking, for more info visit www.drinkaware.co.uk" in its promotion.

Chris Sorek, chief executive of the campaign, said: "While promoting responsible drinking is incredibly important, doing it in conjunction with a £7.99 'all you can drink' promotional offer is completely contradictory.

"We will contact Groove to ensure reference to our website is removed from any future promotion of this kind."

Oh do shut up, Sally. This is getting really tiresome now. Can't she find something else to bang on about for the last few months of her career as an MP? Ridding the world of idolatry? Keeping the sabbath sacred? Banning Christmas? There are plenty more puritanical issues she could take up.

MP's should be serious at election time and the public are put off by cheap electioneering.
MP Keeble should tell the people of Northampton she will:-
Through Government and with other political parties if necessary:- do everything to improve A Level & GCSE results in the County
Support the regeneration of Northampton Town Centre and surrounds by creating new jobs in housing, investment and support business owners.
Support the expansion plans of The Cobblers and The Saints by insisting NBC's views, although well intentioned, are too narrowly focused .
Improve the raillinks for Northampton not only to Birmingham & London but East & West thus enhancing our central position geographically and enhance the utilisation of rail transport for freight and passengers alike.
This is what the people of Northampton want to happen. We are not concerned about narrow party political views. We want MP to do things that suit us and not just for the political party.MPs should respresent the people!

Guess price doesn't matter if you just charge it to expenses?

Perhaps "im desperate for votes" sally can tell the people how much booze for £7.99 can be purchased at the house of commons bars? not to forget the "freebies".

These politicians don't seem to get the message.
They sit in that house of corruption thinking up ideas about making money, fiddling their expenses. dreaming up laws that don't apply to them. Drinking cheap booze in the "commons" bars, and have the audacity trying to put up the price of alcohol stopping pensioners having a little "tipple"at home because we cant afford to pay the prices in the local pub,

She's cutting it a bit fine, but there might be more vote 'mileage'in campaigning to give the police back their powers to sort out these boozing muppets. A good clip behind the ear from a baton is very sobering.

On a serious note Groove is well known for allowing underage drinking and I know of a 16 year old who was allowed to get that drunk in there that he was found in a door way in town collapsed and can't remember what happened to him, dangerous.
