Losing the Soundhaus would be like losing an old friend

Radio One DJ Jo Whiley and a host of other music names have paid tribute to the Soundhaus music venue after news broke that it is likely to close.
The Great Russell Street venue will stage its last gigs and club nights this year after owner Bill Davison said possible noise complaints from residents of a planned block of flats would harm the business.

Jo Whiley, the Radio One DJ who lives in the county and can be regularly spotted at Soundhaus, said she was saddened by the news.

She told the Chronicle & Echo: "It's such a shame, I love the Soundhaus. It's got such a great atmosphere, really intimate – you can get a good view of the bands – get up close and personal and the acoustics are great.

"I'm really saddened, they always get brilliant bands there too. I've seen Fratellis, Keane and Razorlight there in the past couple of years."

Soundhaus has hosted many well-known bands on the way up, such as Arctic Monkeys, Scissor Sisters, The Killers and The Libertines.
It is also known for giving regular slots to local bands such as The New Cassettes, who are headlining at the venue tonight.

Nick 'Limo' Harding, lead guitarist with another local band The Olly Dabblers, said there was nothing in Northampton to compare to Soundhaus.

He said: "The last couple of years a lot of the new bands you read about have been coming to Soundhaus because it's slightly smaller capacity than The Roadmender and I don't know if there's anything else to replace it."

Mercury-nominated artist Maps, aka James Chapman, who is from Earls Barton, played his first gig at Soundhaus and also used to DJ at its Shakedown club night.

He said: "It will be like losing an old friend.

"I would love to play there one more time before it closes, as a kind of tribute."

But his manager, Jamie Johnson, who also looks after The All New Adventures of Us, said there was still hope for live music fans in Northampton.

He said: "It will be a hole left in a really vibrant period for music in the town but it is a hole that will be filled eventually."

i see jo whiley has mentioned her home town again, the woman really does nothing for Northampton apart from bemoaning that some venue is closing down and how sad it is. Perhaps some action would be better than words,if this place was in Liverpool "where there is a music scene" it would be saved.

Jo Whiley get's on my nerves with her sycophantic yearnings towards any NEXT BIG THING.

Remember when the Roadmender was closing and needed a boost she put Athelete on at the Picturedrome, and broadcast it live on Radio One?!

Thanks Jo your a real freind of Northampton.

well maybe if your that bothered maybe you could do something other than complaining about jo whiley!!
shes just saying she will miss it, i bet the chronical approched her not the other way round. ok she love every 'next big thing' thats no reason the slag her off.

she did do alot for the road mender she hoasts gigs there quite alot of the time, but they are for dissabled people and that im sure is a boost for her. (she does this as her sister is dissabled and she obviously cares for her and has decided to give up her tim for the cause) stop slagging her off.!

Of course it is a shame that such a good venue will be closing. But there's no justification for it whatsoever, simply greed.

To take out the only small stage in the entire Roadmender building leaving nothing but a 950 capacity main room is just stupid. It means that only "big" bands will MAYBE bother coming to this town, everyone else gets written off as always.
As for local music, the management of these venues have done nothing to support it, screwing every penny out of it and hardly giving anything back in return.

A hell of a lot could be said that people don't know about but surprise surprise, it can't be.

It's a joke.

They're not even paying the bands who are playing the final night there. But is it a free show?
OF COURSE NOT! The money from the door is going straight into their back pockets. Again. And yet it will sell out, regardless. It's a stanglehold.

The Soundhaus is a building that has been home to so many memories and has indeed hosted a lot of 'up and coming bands'.... so why does everyone only ever mention the likes of the Killers and Razorlight?? I mean, seriously, what the hell have they got to do with this town's ever suffocated music scene? Have they put it on the map? No. Have local bands? Yes.

A monopoly on the town's only music venues has backed every musician and fan into a disgustingly purple corner.
The Soundhaus has funded all other Purplehaus buildings, dragging their sorry asses for years. And as soon as an opportunity came, rife with pityful excuses like "POSSIBLE threats" oh look it gets closed down with a nice little profit on the side.

What's more is that the so-called 'plan' to turn it into practice rooms is complete rubbish - the bands who have been PAYING TO PRACTICE THERE FOR YEARS have in fact been keeping the whole building open with their rent.

This whole thing is a farse and people need to get a backbone and stand up for the dying community that is this town.

There is just too much talent to be
