A disciplinary investigation has been launched after a police speed camera operator was caught napping on the job in Northampton.
The sleepy Northamptonshire Police support worker was snapped dozing off in his van, parked close to the speed camera in Billing Road, on the edge of Cogenhoe and near the Billing Mill pub.

He now faces an investigation and has been taken off duties involving members of the public.

Motorist Mark Draycott, 40, of Northampton, who took the picture, said the police support worker had parked in a "dangerous" spot.

He said he was parked half on the verge and half on the road, causing drivers to queue behind him and then indicate before edging past the vehicle.

He said: "I was just annoyed. The police are quick to jump on everybody else about stuff.

"It's like it's a case of 'Do as I say not as I do', so I thought it was only fair that I took the picture."

He added: "You could see he had nodded off. His mouth had dropped open.

"I took the picture and motorists hooted in support, but he slept on, oblivious. It was a disgrace."

A nearby sign was emblazoned with "reducing road casualties in Northamptonshire".

The picture was first featured in The Sun newspaper on Saturday, prompting a number of complaints about the police worker's behaviour.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "The national newspaper article was brought to our attention by people who had read it.

"The member of police staff in the picture has been removed from public-facing duties while the matter is investigated."

you could class that as falling asleep at the wheel if the keys are still in teh ignition, although he will probably only get a slap on the wrist

Poor bloke was probably cream crackered. That maggot who took the photo would've been whinging if he'd got flashed anyway so either way the sleeping policeman was going to end up as the villain.

some of the above posts are extremely feeble. the speeding restrictions save thousands of lives each year in the uk.
there is probably a logical explaination to his falling asleep..perhaps a loved one is in hospital and he has had to be by their side but also work?
and to be totally honest, i can't say i have ever experienced a police support unit with just one man, it's always at least 2.
cut this poor fella' some slack please!!

Had the happy snapper taken the trouble to at least knock on the window, and say 'Are you all right?' as I hope a passing police officer would do for me, he might have had a different take on this. By the time the Force get a response - the guy was ill, sick, diabetic or whatever - all that people will remember that someone with an axe to grind clicked a shutter. Very public spirited! Pick up on less than satisfactory service, sure, but make sure the facts are accurate.
