This is the first image showing exactly what a new marina, which is due to be built in the centre of Northampton, will look like.
The final piece of funding for the £2 million development at Becket's Park was put in place yesterday and work is now expected to start on the project in January.

Northampton Borough Council's cabinet member for the environment Councillor Trini Crake (Lib Dem, Boughton Green) said: "We're striving to take Northampton forward as a special and distinctive place.

"And for too long the River Nene has been a fantastic natural asset that the town seemed to have forgotten.

"The marina will be something everyone can enjoy, bringing visitors to the town and creating opportunities."

Funding for the project has been supplied by the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) and the Environment Agency and yesterday, Northamptonshire County Council agreed to give more than £204,000 to the project.

Councillor Heather Smith, the county council's cabinet member for the environment and growth, said: "This is a very important step forward for this project which aims to transform the riverfront, making it an extremely pleasant place in which to be, while at the same time providing a focus for the boating community."

Once it is completed, the marina will provide moorings for more than 80 boats and is expected to become a regional centre for the boating community.

It is hoped work on the marina could be completed by March 2011. Further work to improve the park is then planned, including the creation of riverside cafes and restaurants, a new bridge, a coffee shop, a spa and fitness suite and one or more water taxis.

Becket's Park would also be improved by the creation of a boat and cycle hire business and a tourism centre, but the later phases of work are not expected to be completed until 2013 or 2014.

The County Council strikes again in Northampton, George shouts from the back seat. They're into everythin'now, the fountain, gold street, the fishmarket, the lot.
Frank, the guv'nor, has a few contacts, and 'e reckons that Harker and Lady Strawberry will be down the road for one o' them unitary authorities again, to blow the Borough Council out the water.
Watch it!
You 'eard it 'ere first.

More building on greenfield sites.

Cely - yet another negative, doom and gloom comment, like most of your postings.

Much of the land the marina is going to be built on is brownfield. It's waste ground, serving no purpose other than being an eyesore.

Get with it cely. You're the first to rant when things aren't being done (including Network Rail digging up the High Street in Towcester - did you get the wry comments in the previous postings??), yet when there's good news about our town, youstill moan.

What's you master plan??

For anyone who knows the site already they will know its currently just an open area of water between the river and the navigation. It is a perfect place to put a marina and will make the river and Becketts Park a really nice place to visit. Don't know how this can be seen as building on a greenfield site. Perhaps we should leave the murky pool full of carrier bags and bikes in it natural state then Cely?

Great news. This should be the start of the creation of a lovely area to visit in future. A huge step in the right direction for the town. As a regular visitor to the canalside areas in Birmingham, with the great bars, restaurants and water taxi, I can't wait to be able to enjoy that here in my home town instead. Congratulations to everyone who has worked to bring this idea to fruition.

Good news for the town, and long overdue.

Also you can tell it's a winner from the number of people from different bodies trying to jump on the bandwagon and take their part of the praise.

Wow, they've finally got around to it. 'It' being a hole in a bank of earth, but wow.
Not sure why anyone other than a boat owner would visit it, but still, it's a good thing.

Just like to point out it's close to the supposed site of the Battle of Northampton (and several other royal tiffs) so perhaps archaeology teams might like to hang around – we don't want Gold Street all over again.
