Former council chiefs revealed to have earned more than Prime Minister

A fat-cat league detailing Britain's highest earning council staff has placed two former Northampton workers in the top four, with both taking home six-figure sums in excess of Prime Minister Gordon Brown's annual salary of £188,000.
The former chief executive of Northamptonshire County Council, Peter Gould, topped the list of Britain's highest earning local government workers, with statistics showing he took home £215,000 in both 2005 and 2006.

In fourth place in the national league was the former chief executive of Northampton Borough Council, Mairi McLean, who took home £125,000 in 2005 and £205,000 in 2006.

The massive sums have been labelled a disgrace by politicians who have been campaigning for years to get top-earning civil servants' wages down.

The Conservative MP for Northampton South, Brian Binley, who is also a member of Northamptonshire County Council, was one of the main critics of the pay deal given to Peter Gould when he left the county council in June last year.

He said: "This is a totally disgraceful situation. It's totally unacceptable. Most rate payers in Northamptonshire don't even earn £25,000 a year, but Peter Gould left this authority at 53 with a £97,000 a year pension and a £291,000 pay-off."

He was backed by the opposition leader on the authority, Councillor John McGhee (Lab, Kingswood). He said: "It's a disgraceful situation to have happened, especially at a time when the Conservatives in charge of the council are shouting about a lack of resources. We're not even one of the biggest authorities around, but we seem to be paying some of the biggest salaries. It's just ridiculous."

The fat-cat table has been put together by campaign group, the Taxpayers' Alliance, using the Freedom of Information Act. The chief executives of Hull and Kensington councils sit in the second and third places in the league.

But in fourth place was former Northampton Borough Council boss Mairi McLean, who thanks to a severance package after she left the council in March last year, took home £205,000 in 2006-07.

The league table also detailed a further nine members of Northamptonshire County Council staff who earned between £105,000 and £145,000.

What can we possibly do? we live under a corrupt government and these councils are corrupt branches hanging off teh corrupt government tree, they shoudl eb forced to take at least 50% pay reduction, how can they be on more money that a prime minister? if more people stood up we could fight, personally a mass protest could work, they should not be on more than 70k for their jobs. they do a rubbish service, dont admit liabilty for failings and tax us even more when we are worse off. i understand bonuses with rewards, but these theives do not deserve so much let alone a bonus, they are failing us so a bonus should be null and void. however these people decide what they earn as they are at the top of the council, they also get expenses on top of their wages. personally a mass protest (only worth doing in numbers) and also maybe face court for skimming so much money, as we effectivly pay there wages should we not have a say in what tehy earn depending upon performance to the tax payers?

This is an absolute disgrace.

Northampton council is poor in comparison to other places I have lived so I would expect them to be at the bottom of the league table. I see now why the Northampton council tax level is one of the highest in the UK.

!!! THIS MUST STOP NOW !!!

!!!! GIVE US BACK OUR MONEY !!!

!!! YOU DONT DESERVE IT !!!!

Now we see why the fireworks on the 5th Nov were cancelled due to lack of funds and also why the town could not afford Christmas decorations this year. Fat cats lining their own pockets. Bloody disgrace.

One bonus, looking at the pic of Mairi McLean, at least she isn't splashing our cash on expensive tasteful jewellery!!!

No wonder Northampton has deteriorated catastrophically.
