Furious villagers have protested outside the Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines (HTP) premises in Brixworth to voice their opposition to plans to build two 127m high wind turbines.
Lancaster-based Wind Direct has submitted a planning application to Daventry District Council to install the two turbines and Mercedes-Benz HTP plans to use 92 per cent of the electricity generated, with the rest being exported to the National Grid.

David Le Sueur, chairman of the Stop Brixworth Wind Farm Group, which organised the protest on Saturday morning, said: "Our main objections are that there is no economic or power justification to build these turbines. There is no actual benefit to anybody living in Brixworth.

"Mercedes-Benz could leave in 10 years and we would be left with these things."

Lindsay Lamb, wife of former England and Northamptonshire cricketer Allan, said: "I am furious. They are totally raping the countryside. This is an area of natural beauty and I just think these wind turbines are so dangerous."

Many of the residents said they felt angry that they had not been properly consulted about the proposals before the planning application went to the district council.

Vanessa Saunders, a resident of Brixworth, said: "We have to live with Mercedes-Benz and we should be able to co-exist. What they are doing is upsetting and losing the goodwill of people. They have decided to do something with no thought for the local people. Would they put Lewis Hamilton in a car that would perform so badly? I don't think so."

Jill Philpott, a resident of Hanging Houghton, said: "Mercedes are riding roughshod over people's lives. The neighbourhood just feels so helpless. It is just so unfair."

Jennifer Sheehan, spokeswoman for Mercedes-Benz HighPerformanceEngines, said the company was holding an open day on Thursday, November 13, at Brixworth Village Hall, between 2.30pm and 7pm.

She said: "The residents will have the opportunity to come along and view the plans in more detail and they will get the chance to speak directly to people from Wind Direct and Mercedes-Benz."

Man-made climate change is the greatest global threat that we face today. Not to take action or to actively oppose measure which will address it are highly irresponsible and small minded.
Wind power must and will play a key role in our energy mix, alongside other renewables and energy efficiency. The UK has some 40% of the European wind resource and the potential to be a world leader.
Mercedes Benz must be congratulated for their plans to source their energy from sustainable energy, it is good to see a large company taking action in a responsible way.

I don't get it, what's the problem with the wind turbines? Do people just not like the look of them? surely they can't reject a planning application just because some people don't like the look of them. Why don't they just paint them pink or put a smiley face on them or something?

Here we go again...!

'there is no actual benefit to anybody living in Brixworth'

Hello? What about the benefits to the planet as a whole? Surely if Mercedes are using more wind generated energy it means that there is less demand on fossil fuels which benefits us all - not just the residents of Brixworth.

Interesting...

Clearly the pro-Mercedes comments have touched a raw nerve somewhere.

Perhaps some people need to open their minds a little more.

I for one support the use of wind turbines, they are masterpieces of architecture and they serve a purpose.

I can see the Burton Wolds Wind Farm from my house and I think it enhances the view, awesome!!

wow - someone must have said something to offend! grow up whoever it is! I agree and support this article.
Life is about choice and it is only right that people from Brixworth and other nearby villages should make their feelings known about this. Looking at the picture it looks like quite a few people turned out.

Please support the right to freedom of speech. You have the right to post your argument here as much as anyone else. This censorship does not achieve anything.

None of the previous, now censored, comments were offensive, they simply expressed people's opinions.

Say yes to Brixworth Wind Farm, Oh, and Harlington and Kelmarsh, they would be of benefit too!

Des - You may or may not be right about Brixworth and Harlington - two places with widespread development and light industry, but you are wrong about Kelmarsh. In an area which does not even have electricity pylons the siting of that farm is completely wrong. It is one of the remaining truly tranquil places in Northants.
I would recommend anyone to spend an afternoon visiting Naseby, Cottesbrook, Kelmarsh, Cold Ashby, Thornby and a lot of other villages to see what it is special about that area which deserves landscape protection.

Naseby Battlefield is the birthplace of our democracy and should be left untouched (including the cumulative view) for those who still visit to pay their respects.

I think that the wind turbines are a great thing, they can come and put them up near me if they want, i dont mind if it spoils part of the country side, it is keeping the country side here at least!!

People need to start thinking of the future, your children and grand children, what are they going to do when all the oil runs out and selfish people have not been allowing other sources to be used!!
