Fear of complaints closes Northampton rock venue

The Soundhaus music venue in Northampton will close, its owner has announced, leading to the loss of about 30 jobs and the departure of a venue which has played host to some of Britain's biggest bands.
The music venue and club, owned by Bill Davison of Purplehaus, hosted bands such as Keane, The Arctic Monkeys, the Scissor Sisters and The Killers before they hit the big-time.

But after planning officials allowed permission for a block of flats to be built across the road from the building, in Great Russell Street, The Mounts, Mr Davison has said he fears noise complaints from future residents could lead to action being taken against the venue.

Announcing his decision to pull the plug after eight years, he said: "The flats will stand just 30ft away from the front doors of the Soundhaus. The implications of this are obvious.

"If someone rings Environmental Health about the noise then they will be more than happy to come out and police it."

The announcement comes after news this week that a West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) move to stop the demolition of the former Top of the Town nightclub, opposite the Soundhaus, had been overturned by a national planning inspector. The decision paves the way for a four-storey block of flats and offices to be built.

With the Soundhaus in the last year of its lease, Mr Davison said he was unwilling to commit to 20-plus more years of possible noise complaints.

About 30 staff at the Soundhaus will be made redundant by the move, which will happen before the end of the year.

Angela Phillips, a manager at the venue, said it was irreplaceable.

She said: "I'm really, really upset. Yes, we still have Roadmender but it's not the same.

"It was our rock venue. It was the only thing that had rock stuff going on and I think we've lost something big."

WHY DO THEY HAVE TO CLOSE THEY WERE THERE FIRST. IF PEOPLE DONT LIKE THE SOUND THEN THEY SHOULD NOT BUY OR LIVE NEAR IT. GREAT MORE YOUNGSTERS WITH NO WHERE TO GO.

Just what Northampton needs, more crappy over-priced flats in a crap area that no one can afford, no one will buy and no one will invest in, and less venues for people to go to.

The Northampton planners have lost the plot, excuse the pun. They knew this venue was there before granting planning permission. It is just me or is it obvious that planning should have been refused !!!

Maybe they will knock it down and put lots of traffic lights on it :-)

Yeah great, Roadmender - no offence, i know Roadmender is all snazzy now after being done up, but nothing, not even Roady can compare to Soundhaus. I agree with Angela, Its irreplaceable. Its the last rock venue we have after losing Lounge and Black Sheep. We no longer have a solid place where we know we can enjoy. Ill follow for the music. Not for the venue.

Lamb of God played there last year. That concert kicked ass! What the hell are we going to do now ? Where are any rock gigs gonna be played now in Northampton ?
I was hoping Shadows Fall would play there sometime in the future.
Get them to build their Goddamn flats somewhere else.
Use the space for a factory or something.
SAVE THE SOUNDHAUS !

It's a bit strange closing the venue before you even get any complaints ?

I suppose the land the Soundhaus is on must be worth a lot more money now that Top Of The Town is being given the green light for flats.

You would be silly to sit on land that must be worth a nice pension and perfect for the developers, or I am just being synical ? Come on that land must be worth a fortune ?

Sell up Bill and enjoy the money . Your not getting any younger.

it seems to me odd that the owner has thrown in the towel even before any flats have been built.the roadmender has had flats built opposite, though perhaps not as near as Top of the Town is to the soundhaus but nether the less there has been no reports of complaints. Is there another reason the soundhaus has to close?

Great. Another blow to the small music scene we have in Northampton.

And to be fair, if you move into flats across the road from a music venue, you've kind of got to expect noise. It's kind of like moving in near Alton Towers and complaining about the sound of rollercoasters.

They could keep The Soundhaus open if Tops was reopened instead of squeezing more overpriced flats on what is not exactly a prime spot to want to live. The flats will only end up let to scroungers who will make the area even worse.

Get Top Of The Town back- I used to prowl there when in my prime.
