The makers of Northampton's Monopoly board have been criticised by historians for an embarrassing blunder on the identification of one of the town's top landmarks.
The Northampton board had its official launch last week.

But excited players who snapped up the first copies found the £100 Delapre Abbey square contained a picture of Fawsley Hall, which is near Daventry, instead of the 864-year-old Northampton landmark.

The mistake was spotted just hours before the company was due to start a second print run of the board, which is already selling well in the shops.

A spokesman for the game's makers said: "We've become aware of an unfortunate mix-up, which we're looking into as we speak.

"We'll be correcting it immediately for the next print run which will now take place in a few days time."

The mistake has led to speculation the boards containing the mistake could one day become collectors' items.

The chairman of the Friends of Delapre Abbey, Graham Walker, said: "It's a real shame this has happened.

"There can only be a few people in Northampton who don't know what Delapre Abbey looks like.

"But I would imagine it would be worth buying one of the early boards now, they might become quite rare."

It is not known how the photographic mix-up happened, but the board clearly shows the 16th century Fawsley Hall building sandwiched between Guildhall Road and Holy Sepulchre Church, instead of the 12th century Delapre Abbey.

Fawsley Hall's general manager Brian Garside said: "As far as I know, I don't think they ever contacted us to be on the board. So I'm sort of speechless, because I wasn't aware of this at all.

"The Monopoly board is obviously a great thing to be associated with, but I suppose it's just a shame it's our picture and Delapre Abbey's name."

The game is currently on sale at shops across Northampton for a recommended price of £25.

Yet another Northampton fine mess -up!i dont believe the game was`nt checked and re-checked for mistakes before production.I agree with mr Graham Walker i too think the game will become "rare"in fact i think it will become "extinct"also i cant see the first edition`s making a small fortune on Antiques Roadshow in a 100 years time. But i can see them fetching 50p at a car bootsale in a couple of years time.

The Chron would be better served asking local politicians the following questions:-
Why is Notrthamptonshire ranked 150 out of all Local Education Authorities and what are they doing about improving thing for the future?
Why is the Emergent Core Strategy delayed since March 2008, then postponed to Nov 2009 and now delayed into 2010 and who is responsible?
What is the nature of the "agreement" signed by Legal & General and the various bodies regarding the regeneration and extension of the Grosvenor Centre?
The reason I suspect these questions won't be asked is the relationship between the Chron and the Local Authorities is clearly non-confrontational.

Nail on the head sir

We need the likes of John Pilger and Paul Foot. What has happened to the British (Okay, Pilger was Australian) investigative journalist? Who is holding local politicians to account?

Andrew, I don't think it was Northampton's fault that there was an error. Roger, I'm still waiting for your lcoal news paper, as I would be interested to see what stories you would feature. No doubt they would be full of doom and gloom. Also this isn't a story about the council, there are plenty of other stories about them.

Just for a change Northampton was picked to do something a bit fun, yes there was a mistake but they will end up selling more now because of the extra promotion.

Sorry to tell you this girl but if you read any front page paper or tune in to the first few minutes of news it's all about doom and gloom.
For that is what sells and that is all the media is about, buy the papers, watch the news, listen to the radio, sad but true.
It will only be a rare fortune to people who actually live here and know the mistake, others who bought it to play the game it won't be worth much if opened.

They should have made the board game Cluedo based at Delapre Abbey. Who would our local characters have been in place of Prof. Plum, Mrs. White, etc.? Or Buckaroo based on a clapped out Astra! Any other suggested board games?
