Dragon-shaped play mounds could be installed on The Racecourse in Northampton, as part of a masterplan to improve the area.
Northampton Borough Council has provided funding for the landscaping scheme, which would see a number of small grassy hills created around the park.

The proposals are currently at an early stage and will be displayed at the next Friends of Northampton Racecourse (FoNR) meeting in February, along with a public consultation on making The Racecourse a protected conservation area.

Giles Wilson, chairman of FoNR, said: "The plan is to have a series of small mounds shaped like a dragon. Younger children will be able to roll up and down them.

"We hope it will improve the facilities at the park for small children and we have gone to great lengths to protect trees and the view of nearby housing. We have also been in contact with the police to look at the security of the mounds and making sure they do not block out the view."

The borough council will be running a consultation on making the whole of The Racecourse and the surrounding houses part of a new conservation area.

Other improvements which have already been introduced to The Racecourse included a series of white map spheres, which appeared around the park last year.

Residents have until January 30 to fill in a questionnaire on the merits of Kingsley Conservation Area, which would cover the park.

Mr Wilson said: "I think it is a very good idea. It does not prevent progress but it does mean we have some sort of control over development that might damage the environment we are living in. I am happy to get feedback from local residents on the plans which will then be passed to the borough council."

The FoNR meeting will at the Best Western Lime Trees Hotel, 8 Langham Place, Barrack Road, Northampton on Tuesday, February 3 at 7.30pm.

The consultation documents can be downloaded from the website www.northampton.gov.uk/ consultation or seen at the Central Library in Abington Street, The One Stop Shop at the Guildhall and Cliftonville House reception, Bedford Road.

The borough council Conservation Team is available on Northampton 837638.

One worry here. Won't this encourage the use of bikes, notably motorbikes. When the 'bunding' was dropped on the delepre residents down London road to prevent Travellers alighting there, it saw an influx of unwanted bikers riding up and down them. I appreciate that there is a restriction of this sort of vehicle on the Racecourse, but people don't seem to pay much attention to the rules thesedays!

The regeneration idea is good but whats going to stop people being mugged on the park?? in the chron yesterday was another 2 incidents of robbery

The racecourse may look pretty but its always been a very dangerous place to walk on your own!!

As a matter of interest where did the council find the money to pay for the landscaping??

Hopefully they will have the foresight to surround the area with those cut down telepgraph stumps to stop the mounds being abused by bikes, etc.,

Although it sounds like a great idea, I wonder how much they'll charge us for making these mounds?! One bulldozer for a days and a few tonnes of topsoil...

Doing things to "improve" ... is that what they said when they dismantled the old tennis court, which the kids used throughout the summer for football?

Talking of football, how about leaving the goalposts up for the summer. We hear "preserve the grass" ... well, why not periodically move them? It's not rocket science, now is it?

Given the amount of crime that occurs in the parks, particularly the Racecourse, isn't it LONG overdue to install a significant amount of lighting throughout the park?

they obviously decided not to have a balloon festival then as the lumps would get in the way.
Get real Council - spend the money policing the park, to make it safe.
funny howthere is money for this sort of thing and decisions can be made - but on the important things like redevelopment a decision takes ten years or more!!v

SPJ.

Come on - it's Northampton .... you know that they'll build the lumps (a huge bill) and flatten them for the festival (significant bill) and rebuild so-called "improved" lumps away from the festival area afterwards (the biggest bill).
