Two members of the ruling Liberal Democrat party have resigned in the latest twist in the ongoing 'Astragate' saga.
Councillors Malcolm Mildren and Jean Hawkins announced yesterday morning that they had quit the party and would now serve as independent members on Northampton Borough Council.

Their decisions came after the yet-to-be-appointed leader of the authority, Councillor Brian Hoare (Lib Dem, Abington) announced he would keep former leader Tony Woods (Lib Dem, St Davids) in the authority's ruling cabinet, despite the recent controversy.

Councillor Mildren (Ind, Parklands) said he could not live with the decision, following the embarrassment caused to the party by the affair, which revolved around Councillor Woods' decision to leave his un-taxed Astra in the Guildhall's town centre car park for more than three months despite numerous requests to move it.

He said: "This whole thing has become much bigger than the car.

"To me, it's all about the way he dealt with the issue and the fact he allowed a molehill to become a mountain.

"It was symbolic of a leader who was not aware of what people were thinking."

Following the fallout of Astragate, Councillor Woods decided to resign as leader, but delayed his exit until next week, a fact which has been criticised by his detractors.

Councillor Mildren said: "When he resigned, he should have left immediately – rather than stay on as leader.

"And now we know he's going to be propelled immediately back into the cabinet, probably doing pretty much what he was before."

Following Councillor Woods' decision to resign, Councillor Hoare was chosen as the new leader of the Liberal Democrat group during a party meeting last week.

Despite the criticism of his decision to keep Councillor Woods in his cabinet, he wished both defecting councillors well, adding: "I'm very sorry to lose Malcolm and Jean.

"Both have been supportive of the changes we've made to Northampton, and are clearly leaving for personal reasons. Nonetheless, they will be missed and we wish them well."

Councillor Woods said last night: "I am very sad that Malcolm and Jean have decided to leave our group. They have both been valued members of the team.

"Since joining us from the Tories, Malcolm has seemed happy as Larry. It is difficult to understand why he is leaving us and sad to see him so bitter. That is not the Malcolm we all know and respect."

The new leader of the council and any cabinet changes will be made official during a meeting of the authority next Monday.

What was the point of all the meetings and wasted time over Astragate when the guilty person still holds an important office role under the new leader , he should have been kicked into touch for his stubborn behaviour , he might even return the Astra to its parking position when it requires a new M.O.T

There are several more who feel just as infuriated but for many and varied personal reasons cannot 'up and go'

It says a lot though about the quality of the new 'Leader' who very obviously was 'given' the job on the proviso that he kept Woods on.

Fair play to the two Councillors. Says an awful lot for the unity of the Liberal Democrats. It's clear to the man in the street that there is much bitterness within the group. And mustn't the long standing servant of the party Councillor Church be at boiling point?

The INTRESTING point is that thier switch to sit as Independents reduced the administrations majority from 5 down to 1

It now NEEDS only one more member to walk away from them for them to be relying on other support

Northampton Defend Council Housing would like to thank members of the NEW INDEPENDANT group for calling in a recent decision of NBC Cabinet

The call-in meeting will take place on Wednesday 28th October at 6pm at the Guild Hall [Town Hall]

The fact that this INDEPENDENT GROUP is prepared to hold the administration to account and scrutiny, is a great start?

The fact is, on a council like this there's absolutely no need for a party system. Each councillor should know what's happening without being prompted how to vote, and should be capable of being elected on their own merits not with policies handed to them. Anyone who clings to it is more interested in the party (and possibly their political career) than the people they represent.

Unlike the disgraced Woods, I don't think democracy and debate 'lead to chaos', it leads to people who can actually argue their case, who believe in what they say, who pay attention to the decisions rather than rubber stamping them, and people who stand up to bullies who disregard others views.

Have him back in the cabinet? Are they taking their cues from Russia? Putin Woods and his little puppet... let's hope he doesn't pose stripped to the waist and practising his judo.

Well done Mildren and Hawkins, there are others who aren't happy let's hope they do the decent thing and walk too. And next election folk... ignore the parties, vote for an sensible independent.

;-D One remembers the Braveheart Freedom Speech

"Wallace: Sons of Scotland, I am William Wallace.

Young soldier: William Wallace is 7 feet tall.

Wallace: Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his ass. I am William Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What would you do without freedom? Will you fight?

Veteran soldier: Fight? Against that? No, we will run; and we will live.

Wallace: Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live -- at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!"

Ah the democracy argument comes to the fore.
Can someone please explain;
How it is democratic to stand for election under a party banner, be elected under that party banner then leave that party and continue in office without reference to the electorate.
Do the voters in Eastfield and Parklands not matter at all in this silly little charade being played out.
Almost all of the power now resides in the WNDC.
Will Woods leave that position?
