Chairman says support from Northampton Saints' fans is 'fantastic'
The chairman of Northampton Saints, Keith Barwell, paid tribute to the fans' "absolutely fantastic" support after watching his team secure promotion.
Speaking immediately after the final whistle from his seat in the Tetley Stand, Mr Barwell said unwavering support during Saints' season in National League One had been rewarded.
Reacting to the 18-8 victory against Exeter Chiefs, Mr Barwell thanked fans and said he was hoping to achieve qualification into the European Cup next season.
He said: "I am completely thrilled. I'm thrilled for the team and for the fans. All the support has been absolutely fantastic, as it always is, and promotion is wonderful for the supporters. The past season has shown what great fans this team has and I want to thank them."
Mr Barwell said the move back up into the Premiership was important for more reasons than the extra income it will secure for the team, through television coverage and ticket sales. He said: "It is important financially, but it is also important simply for pride. It's important for the pride of the fans and the town."
Despite not losing a single match so far in National League One, Mr Barwell said it was important to be realistic about the hopes for the coming season, with Saints taking on much bigger clubs. He added: "I've got my sights set on qualification for the Heineken Cup."
Mr Barwell confirmed six months ago that he planned to retire from being at the helm of Saints, but vowed he would not step down until the team was financially secure.
