Traffic lights are out at a busy Northampton roundabout for the second day running.

Engineers have been on site at the Tesco roundabout at Mereway since 8am but it is not known how long they will be out for.

There is slight congestion but traffic is moving.

A spokeswoman for MGWSP, which runs the county's highways network, said the lights had been knocked out when a car crashed into one of the traffic light poles at 2.45am yesterday, pulling out the cables.

She said the agency had applied to traffic management to close one lane of the roundabout in order to carry out repairs but the start of work was being delayed due to health and safety concerns because of the rain.

Work is expected to begin at 9.30am.

One motorist said: "For the past two days, the morning rush hour has been better than ever, there were no queues and it was easy to get round.

"They should leaves these lights turned off."

The lights were out all day yesterday, it wasn't raining then. Is it just convenience to blame the rain instead of admitting to poor administration?

"There is slight congestion but traffic is moving."

Blimey, so it's actually improved matters then?

What is the point of putting traffic lights on roundabouts ? It just creates "dead-time" when no vehicles are using the roundabout. When the lights were out this week on St. Peter's Way, the traffic flowed so much better.

the location of the traffic lights at the mereway roundabout is terrible anyway. they need to make it bigger and help the people coming out of hunsbury get onto the roundabout. St peters way roundabout should go back to how it was but a little bit bigger. so many people run the lights as there are many too close together. obviously yet again northampton council cant do anything right for this town.

Yes it was really useful to have the information board just a couple of hundred yards from the roundabout, warning of possible congestion ahead.

Nothing on the board at Weston Favell, I thought these signs were to alert you of problems so you can avoid them, not state the blimmin obvious when you get there?

The Countess and I are just reminiscing as to how sad it is that Councillor Bob Seery was defenestrated as head honcho for roads on the Tory Cabinet at County Hall.
It means that we can't keep blaming him for all these highways disasters. It's not qute the same blaming it on Heather Smith. Still, we think we'll get used to that in due course as will New Girl "Roadie" Heather herself. When there is a real foul up MGWSP will make sure she is the name that's quoted!
