Published Date: 31 May 2008
Chron readers have been emailing their verdict on the big Britain's Got Talent final - and many are puzzled as to why Northamptonshire schoolgirl Faryl Smith did not feature in the top three.
The Kettering schoolgirl was the bookies' favourite but was not in the top three places despite huge applause for her performance of Ave Maria in the live TV show.

The winner was 14-year-old dancer George Sampson from Warrington, who pipped runners-up Signature and third-placed Andrew Johnson to the £100,000 first prize and the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Show.

Here are your comments on the show:

What an absoulute Disgrace Faryl Did not WALK AWAY with Britains Got Talent. I am not really an Opera Fan but the Girl ( Faryl ) Knocked me for six with her incredible Voice. The girl should have Waltzed away with the Show. It made me very Angry On Saturday Night

WHAT AN OUTRAGEOUS OUTCOME!!!
THE WINNER GEORGE HAS A ABOUT A 10TH OF THE TALENT OF AT LEAST 7 OF THE 10 FINALISTS!!
IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT IS A FIX AND I AM DEFINATLEY NOT GOING TO WASTE MY MONEY ON VOTING AGAIN!!!!
DISGUSTING!!

I am not a lover of these programs, but have been compelled to watch as the standard has been so how, but, like so many people you speak to the top three winners were so wrong, In my opinion and I am one who will be subjected to watching the royal variety, the three winners should have been Faryal, Escala and Andrew. They were by far the best.
As a previous comment states this stinks of match fixing.
Perhaps Simon could apply for his own version of the Royal Variety with the acts that were in the semi finals.

HI I THOUGHT GEORGE HAD REAL TALENT&GOOD LUCK TO HIM. THE JUDGES HAD STRESSED ALL ALONG THEY WERE NOT LOOKING FOR A SINGER. HOW COINCIDENTAL CAN THAT BE ? THE ONE SINGER THAT WAS CHOSEN OUT OF THE THREE ANDREW JOHNSON . CAN SING NOW1.( BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HIS VOICE BREAKS?) WAS NEVER A HOT FAVOURITE. THATS MY OPINION. AND WHAT OF FARYLL! YES AN OUTSTANDING SINGER HER VOICE WILL CARRY HER FAR. I FEEL THE AVA MARIA SPOILT IT FOR HER.AS SHE COULD NOT HIT THE CLIMATIC NOTE AND THATS SOMETHING THAT FARYLL WILL ENCOUNTER TRYING TO PERFORM BEYOND HER MEANS. NO DISRESPECT.THE NIGHT SHE WON HER SEMI FINAL SHE TOLD THE PRESENTER OF B.G.M.T. THE SONG SHE WOULD SING FOR THE FINAL WAS TO BE AMAZING GRACE. WHAT HAPPENED?? I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED.AND FEEL FARYLL WOULD HAVE PULLED IT OFF. WHEN FARYLL MAKES AN ALBUM I WOULD BE INTERESTED AND LOOK FORWARD TO HEAR HER SING SONGS FROM MUSICALS. MY SECOND CHOICE WAS THE VERY TALENTED ESCALA AND NO DOUBT WE HAVE NOT HEARD THE LAST OF THEM . THIRD CHOICE ,MR MUIR I THOUGHT HE SANG IMAGINE
PERFECTLY .HE MADE A COMMENT TO ANT &DEC THE CHOICE OF SONG WAS TAKEN OUT OF HIS HANDS.THATS ANOTHER THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED THE PERSON PERFORMING SHOULD BE ABLE TO SING THE SONG THEY ARE COMFORTABLE WITH..I WOULD!NT MIND GUESSING IF THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH FARYLL .IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT ? (WAS THERE SOME SKULL DUGGERY ) ANY WAY GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF THEM.

Incredible that so many millions could have voted for a break dancer. He was good but he did not have that wow factor. It is very sad when raw talent is not the priority by the mass of the english public. I think these were emotive votes! I know that those three judges would have picked Andrew or Faryals or Escarla. That is actually talent. How did it all come down to breakdancers one group which really only were a tribute to Michael Jackon after all is said and done. I think next year the judges should be the ones to make the final choice and leave the public out of it!!! I will not watch next year. Very deflated!

Yes i agree with everthing that has been said so far, no way should a break dancer have won that show. I was so disgusted and Escala were wonderful also, i will never vote again let the judges decide next year. I am still in shock myself as to the result it was a fiasco.

I have heard Faryl sing solos with the Masquerade choir and knew she was destined for great things......which will come.....she doesn't need the Royal Variety Performance although I understand why she will be disappointed right now. I believe Faryl has already made a cd...where can I get it?

Sir, I can only add myself to the growing contingent of bewildered people scratching their heads at the bizarre result in Saturday night's Britain's Got Talent final. One wonders whether Mr And and Mr Dec read the names from the bottom of the list, rather than the top. Certainly Faryl Smith was by far the standout performer, not only of the night, but of the entire series (how galling it is to agree with Simon Callow!), and it goes wihout saying that we will be hearing from her for many years to come (with all respect to the fellow, one cannot forsee the winner having a career that outlasts the next football season). Perhaps there is something to be said for ITV's (now ceased, of course!) penchant for selecting the winner in advance and irrespective of the telephone votes, in which case Faryl would today be celebrating her overwhelming win. It must also be pointed out that Faryl has far more than a mere talent, the young lady has a God-given gift, and, like the rest of the country, I await her first record with unfettered anticipation (and if she is short of material, I would like to proffer one of my own songs immediately!).

How out of the four top acts only Andrew made it to the top three is unbelievable
Leave the final decision to the judges, The British Public got it wrong once again
If I go to the palace to day I think Charlie boy will be selling his tickets for the Royal Variety.
To watch a boy twitching and thrashing around in bath water is not my idea of Entertainment.
Escala, Faryl, Andrew and even Gin and her owner should have been there and either would have been worthy winners. Much more worthy than Splinter and George.
What was a good leed up and would have shown Britain has got talent ended in a wet shower
Unbelievable.

Faryl is fantastically talented. I have been spellbound by her voice since I first heard her on her first audition. It is difficult to believe she is just 12 years old. She has all the qualities that every parent wants their children to have, her parents deserve to be very proud of her. Faryl looked stunning in her gold dress, it suited her perfectly. Her performance not just tonight but at each stage has been perfect. I think Faryl is destined for even better than the Royal Variety and I really hope to see her perform at many major events worldwide. Well done Faryl, you are the winner in my eyes.

Faryl,
I'm sure that this will be just one of many hundreds of messages. I just watched your world class stunning performance, which took my breath away. Paul Potts was good, but you are truly amazing, with a god given talent.
I'm absolutely disgusted that you didn't even get voted in the top three, which can only mean that there is something very very wrong with the vote count. People up and down the country will be shocked and as disgusted as I am. Faryl, you were the clear winner, no question. I know it's no consolation to you right now, but Kate and Gin should have been runner up, so they lost out too.
Mark my words, you'll be inundated with offers of the right kind. Your talent cannot be denied. You have now had exposure to the people in the industry, so you are definitely on your way to the top. I'm certain of that.
All the best for your very bright future.

I was most surprised that Faryl Smith did not win Britain's got Talent as she was my favourite to win the first time I heard her at the auditions. However I'm sure that now she's been heard on television, her future is assured as she has a marvellous voice and deserves success.

I think she was absolutely out of this world, the voice of a Angel and should have won. I cannot believe she did not win and am stunned that she was not in the final three. I think the voting must of been fixed and there should be a recount. The boy that won it was not that fantastic. The three that should of been in the final were - Faryl Smith, Escala and Andrew who sang Pie Jesu.
Margaret

*

She should have won followed by the young boy singer and then the girls playing the violins. Who in their right mind could vote for a child dancing in the rain and 2 Asian men taking off Michael Jackson !!!!!!!!!! come on you people this is outrageous.

*

I WAS ASTOUNDED THAT FARYL SMITH DID NOT EVEN MAKE THE FINAL THREE AFTER HER AMAZING PERFORMANCE! THIS WHOLE FINAL STINKS OF MATCH FIXING!!!!!

*

I think She has the voice of an angel. I just cant believe the results. Its like the eurovision song contest a complete farce. I do think she will go very far and become very famous. I just hope she kkeps her feet on the ground and remember where she has come from and doesnt turn out like Charotte Church. Best of luck to her and all the other brilliant acts that missed out.
Andrew Lord

*

I thought her voice was very mature, and she sang really well. But I know the Ave Maria, and she chose not to sing the climactic high note of the piece, which to me meant she failed utterly. It is the high point of the entire piece, and she left it out!

I am so dissgusted at the result in BGT Young Faryal should have been the winner in this compertition with Andrew and escarla they where by far the 3 most talented in the show Faryals Performance of av maria was top class I am so Sorry for her it also gets me how so many votes can be counted in so small amount of time from when the lines close to the anouncement of the winner.

Well done George!!Faryl and Andrew were already winners from the time they auditioned, and there are companies waiting to sign them up,I'm sure. They are multi talented. However there are a lot of very good singers and all talent shows have singers as winners.Britains Got Talent is a variety show and people are now fed up with singers winning everything.George is different, and dance is also a talent and he is a worthy winner. Its not about winning ,its about taking part and then winning is a bonus! How many people would love to watch a TV show with all those amazing acts on.
What an amazing film this years BGT would make!!

I believe as no doubt many more do that this programme is fixed, how "Signature" managed to end up in in second place when the likes of Andrew took third and Faryl never even made it to the final three amazes me, Faryl has an exceptional voice and still has a great future ahead of her, ITV must have a strange voting system but then again they havn't got a very good name in that field have they ask "OFCOM", "TRAVESTY".

I must admit I was surprised by the winner; he was just good. However, there were lots of good acts and any of them (except the one who sang "Imagine") could have won. I admit, unashamedly, I voted for the dog! These posts are obviously about Faryl, and I would not have voted for her. True, she has a good voice, but then so do many others of her age. It just wasn't 'different' enough, and I'm not sure about her appearance: I didn't know her age, and thought she was late teens.

I don't think Faryl need worry, I understand any disappointment, but the competition was very good. It somehow seemed unfair that there could only be one winner. I had the pleasure of hearing Faryl nearly two years ago, and even then I knew she was going places.

The top five for me from last night were Faryl, George, Escala, Signature, and the Cheeky Monkeys, in that order. All very good acts I would pay to see the top three.

I don't think Andrew should have been in the finals, I do think flavour should have been rather than the cheeky monkeys. How on earth did Anya Sparks get as far as she did, that was just a pure insult to the talent there.

One thing that did get on my nerves was all the sob stories. Not the time or the place for all that. Talent was the test, as Simon said its not Britain's saddest story.

There should be no hard feelings, congratulations to George, he earnt it, I wish him and the others all the best for the future.

I loved Faryl's performance, but...being a dancer myself i am really happy that George won! Cause both Faryl and Andrew will get contracts etc! It is alot easier for a singer to get recognised than a dancer! And theres been alot of comment about George's performance being described as 'Twitching in the Rain' that is unfair, this style dance (which i do myself with other styles) is very difficult and requires alot of discipline and dedication for practice, so dont take his victory away from him cause he's earned it! Faryl will be huge, like the judges said not just here but everywhere! so Congrats to all the finalists of BGT, im sure they will all go far in their own rights =D! xx

What kind of idiots must you be to assume that the public got it wrong, just because they majority don't agree with your opinion on who should of won. Maybe if this little girl actually had any appeal to her, she would have got into the top three. You can slate the decisions all you want, but the fact is, there were more people that wanted George to win, thus he won. How you can say George isn't talented is stupid, it is a talent contest. Faryl would struggle to get past the boot camp in X Factor, so if tha talent is that scrutinized there, why shouldn't it be in BGT.

Faryl, you really are the best. I can only believe that the program for the Royal Variety Performance had already been made up and they didn't need a singer to fill the last slot ! Their loss .............. and I'm certain you will go on to greater heights. Good Luck for the future.

I find it hillarious how outraged people seem to be that george sampson won!
Faryl Smith had extra help from simon cowell who even paid for private singing lessons for her from the same singing coach that gave private lessons to paul pots when he was on britains got talent and for leona lewis! What right did someone who had extra help have to win?

The same applies to escala who are already very famous (just look on youtube and their proffessional videos). Simon invited them along to britains got talent, they had no intention of going before he sugested it to them because he already knew them due to their fame. The program is about finding Britains unfound talent, and george was just that.

The average age of people that have commented on this site is probably about 50 and are "disgusted" that george won. However george appealed to most of the younger generation of the country and its a shame that the older generation cannot appreciate that he is very talented and has worked hard to get where he is and has not been given extra help by simon cowell, unlike faryl!! George sampsons music was not working when he was trying to rehearse a day before the preformance..maybe again some of simons sly work?

I think george was a deserving winner and was alot more sincere than most of the other contestants! He deffinately deserved to win his preformance was brilliant and you can tell he puts all his heart into his performance
