Northamptonshire schoolgirl Faryl Smith produced a stunning performance in the final of Britain's Got Talent live on television - but missed out on victory.
The 12-year-old from Kettering, who clinched her place in the final of the ITV show with a highly-acclaimed rendition of Sarah McLachlan's Angels on Thursday, won huge applause for her performance of Ave Maria last night.

Wearing a gold dress, the bookies' 10/11 favourite looked emotional as the three judges joined in the standing ovation at the end of her final performance.

However, Faryl was not among the top three voted by the public, and missed the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Show.

The winner was 14-year-old dancer George Sampson from Warrington, who pipped runners-up Signature and third-placed Andrew Johnson to the £100,000 first prize.

After her performance, an emotional Faryl said: "Can I just say thank-you very, very much to my mum for helping me all these years with my singing."

First judge Piers Morgan said: "I just can't believe you're 12. No 12-year-old in the world should have a voice like that. It's been incredible."

Amanda Holden added: "You blow my mind every time I hear you sing. A stunning performance, well done."

And head judge Simon Cowell said: "I watched you standing there shaking like a leaf and then you sang. You are one of the finds for a very long long time. It was world class. I think you're special, and that was for me the absolute best performance of the night so far."

Street dance group Nemesis earned mixed reviews from the three judges.

The five-piece hip hop dance crew from Milton Keynes were third to perform in the final of the talent show that started off with 50,000 entrants.

The three-guy, two-girl group, dressed all in white, earned a standing ovation from the audience but got a mixed reaction from the judges.

Morgan said: "I love you guys. I thought that was the weakest of the three routines we've seen. I'm not sure that's a winning routine."

Holden said: "You are a great example. I don't think that routine was as strong as your semi-final routine."

Cowell pointed out that they had only 24 hours to put the routine together and said: "I think taking everything into account you did terrific."

Incredible that so many millions could have voted for a break dancer. He was good but he did not have that wow factor. It is very sad when raw talent is not the priority by the mass of the english public. I think these were emotive votes! I know that those three judges would have picked Andrew or Faryals or Escarla. That is actually talent. How did it all come down to breakdancers one group which really only were a tribute to Michael Jackon after all is said and done. I think next year the judges should be the ones to make the final choice and leave the public out of it!!! I will not watch next year. Very deflated!
