MP Brian Binley has renewed his call on the Government to provide extra protection for taxi drivers from drunken passengers.
Last year, the Conservative MP for Northampton South, Brian Binley, called on the Government to push for the installation of CCTV cameras and protective shields in taxis and private hire cars.

And this week he called again on the Government to provide protection for vulnerable drivers.

During a House of Commons debate, he said: "Taxi drivers work on the front line of transportation and in the late hours, not least because no other transportation is available then. Their customers are unknown to them and they often pick them up in the very dimmest of light."

Discussing the fact that nationally, 51 taxi drivers have been murdered over the last 15 years, he added: "Taxi drivers carry out a vital function in some of the most difficult circumstances that we might imagine, and they pay a price.

"Taxi drivers are under attack."

The MP also claimed there was increasing evidence to suggest a link between late-night binge drinking and attacks on drivers.

His comments were welcomed by the Government's transport minister, Sadiq Khan, who insisted the Government had made moves to improve driver safety in the past year, including publishing a leaflet which tells drivers how they can improve their safety.

He said: "It is truly appalling that drivers who are, after all, providing a service for the public should be fearful about the prospect of getting through the working day unscathed, or, worse still, should have to endure abuse or violence."

But he warned there was no easy cure to the situation, adding: "There is no magic silver bullet that will solve these problems.

"It is a terrible shame that we live in a society in which people still think that they can abuse taxi drivers verbally or physically and get away without sanction from the criminal justice system."

His sentiments were echoed by Martin Kean, who is a member of the Northampton branch of the Private Hire Association.

He said: "There haven't been a great deal of attacks in Northampton just lately, although obviously any attack is a problem.

"So if the Government can come up with ways to reduce attacks, that can only be applauded. But you'll never get rid of them completely.

So why dont taxi drivers just refuse to pick anyone up who is drunk or acting in a aggresive/threating manner.Trouble is if they did that they would`nt have many fares in Northampton.Let the scumbags walk home and if it`s raining or snowing even better.

Don't be such a muppet andrewjohnb from Thailand. You try being a taxi driver and turning down fares just because they are drunk. You wouldn't have enough money at the end of the week to pay the radio rent etc let alone make a profit!!! Why don't you think before you write.

The Countess and I have just agreed how refreshing it is that MP Binley is being so proactive in campaigning for extra protection for a sector of private enterprise in Northampton.
The Countess, as astute as ever, and a keen Binley "watcher", remarks that in view of his self confessed ignorance of the value of his possessions and the possible worth of his telemarketing and now real estate empire, that perhaps he needs extra protection.
I have suggested, yet again, that he should apply for the Chiltern Hundreds and put us all out of our misery. He could get a Northampton Taxi driver to take him there.
That would be a jolly good fair, and it's not "South of the River" as they say. What's more, with the big man on board they should be safe.

Always the same old story with Private Hire Drivers. I am a Private Hire Driver myself on and off over the years, I have seen it all before. Binley keep your nose out your just trying to make more money for the council, it cost dam too much to fit CCTV and protective shields in cars, anyway if you had a protective shield in your car the customer would do a runner and will not get paid. Most problems are caused by the drivers attitude towards the customer so all you chaps out there sort yourselves out do the job or pack up. The day will come when we get propper taxi drivers back like the Black Cabs and then the council will do away with private hire in this town.
